There’s a lot to like in this 2016. Pepper-dusted, red berries, strawberries, red plums and raspberries. Refined herbs on offer, too. The palate is succulent, fleshy and soft with tangy, red berries and cherries. This has a more approachable feel than the Reserve bottling from here.

Vinous
Deep bright-rimmed ruby. Assertive blackberry, candied licorice, bacon and potpourri scents are complemented by a smoky mineral overtone. Seamless and energetic in the mouth, offering deeply concentrated dark fruit and floral pastille flavors and a building suggestion of exotic spices. Finishes with emphatic mineral and dark fruit character, steadily building tannins and strong tenacity. (JR)

An alluring style, with concentrated cassis and plum puree flavors that move gracefully as the silky structure and perfumy black tea and bergamot notes flitter through. The long, refined finish features subtle, lingering minerality. (JM)

Stéphane Ogier blends this wine from the fruit of his youngest vines, pulling it from some 17 vineyards in the Côtes Brune and Blonde. Mostly destemmed, then vinified in stainless-steel tanks and aged in barrels, the wine is youthful and fresh in its violet scents and red-cherry flavors, lightly buffed and supported by wood tones. What makes it intriguing, however, are the mineral tones, a sense of cool granite that coexists with a broader, clay-like earthiness. While this is inviting to drink now, that complexity suggests it has the potential to age.

As to the base 2016 Côte Rôtie Mon Village, it has outstanding notes of spring flowers, black raspberries, game and tapenade. It’s a classic, forward, charming Côte Rôtie that has medium to full-bodied richness and a layered, undeniably delicious profile geared for drinking over the coming 8-10 years.

The medium-bodied 2016 Côte Rotie Village is a silky, easy-drinking wine that should be consumed over the next decade or so. It offers hints of cedar and vanilla framing mixed red berries and notes of tea leaves and black olives. It would make a solid introduction to the Ogier style, or even Côte Rôtie in general. (JC)
