2017 Herman Story "Nuts & Bolts" California Syrah

SKU #1434535 94 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark More inky purple-colored, the 100% Syrah 2017 Nuts & Bolts was brought up 18 months in 83% new French oak. Tons of meaty, barbecue, spice, chocolate, and assorted dark fruits emerge from the glass, and this puppy packs a punch on the palate, with full-bodied richness, a stacked mid-palate, ripe, sweet tannins, no hard edges, and a rocking finish. Drink this meaty, spicy, peppery powerhouse of a Syrah over the coming 7-8 years. Inner quote mark (10/2019)

94 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Fans of Paso Robles richness should flock to this bottling by Russell From and team. Aromas of seared black currant, charred meat, cocoa and fudge cake drop into an explosively rich palate that's unctuous with cassis, coffee and gingerbread into the finish. Yet there's a sizzle of acidity that gives tension throughout. (MK) Inner quote mark (4/2020)

93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Dark purple. Powerful, smoke- and spice-accented aromas of ripe blackberry, cherry liqueur, vanilla and olive paste are lifted by a suave, building floral element. Sweet, seamless and deeply concentrated, offering plush black and blue fruit preserve, cherry-vanilla, mocha and floral pastille flavors that spread out steadily on the back half. The sweet, pliant, impressively long finish is given shape by slow-building tannins that fold slowly into the wine's lush dark fruit. 83% new French oak. (JR) Inner quote mark (2/2020)

K&L Notes

Josh Raynolds writes: "Readers looking for flamboyant, full-throttle, no-holds-barred red wines will find plenty to love here. Owner/winemaker Russel Fromm’s wines, which lean heavily toward Rhône grapes, are among the Central Coast’s most flamboyant and high-octane bottlings but I seldom find them to be truly overbearing or thick in the way, that, for example, a number of Barossa Valley Shiraz’s were in the early 2000s. Most of the Herman Story wines do cruise well past 15% alcohol and some nudge 16% but there’s usually good buffering acidity to keep them energetic. They’ll likely freak out most die-hard, Old World wine lovers but I’d be more than happy to drink them this winter with rich meat preparations and I’ve had them work fabulously with braised Indian lamb dishes (shank, for example) as well as Thai Massaman beef curries that are on the mild side."
