2017 Domaine de la Janasse "Chaupin" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (1.5L) (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1434398 97 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark Deeper colored, the 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin comes mostly from the Chaupoin lieu-dit yet always has small parts from La Janasse and a sandy part of the La Crau lieu-dit. Blackberries, ground herbs, graphite, and new leather notes all emerge from this concentrated, rich, powerful wine that stays tight, focused, and elegant on the palate. It's a killer wine, but it's going to need time. Inner quote mark (8/2019)

Outer quote mark Brilliant magenta. Ripe red and blue fruits, potpourri, incense and Moroccan spices on the deeply perfumed, expansive nose. Stains the palate with sweet boysenberry, black raspberry and floral pastille flavors, which are sharpened by building mineral and white pepper flourishes. Shows the depth and power of the vintage but comes off lively, even graceful. Delivers strong floral thrust on the extremely long, gently tannic finish. (JR) Inner quote mark (12/2019)

94 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Mostly grown on the sandy soils of lieu-dit Chapouin, with some Crau and Janasse components too, the oldest vines were planted way back in 1912. Two-thirds of the wine are aged in foudre, one-third in demi-muid. It's very lush and opulent, showing black fruits with prune, plum and loganberry. It has a good weight of tannin, and the ripe acidity helps to pull it into focus, leading onto a long finish. An authentic expression of quintessential Châteauneuf - loud, proud and high fidelity. Drinking Window 2020 - 2029. (MW) Inner quote mark (10/2018)

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The all-Grenache 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin is sourced from sandy soils and ages in a combination of foudres and demi-muids. It shows more structure than the regular cuvée, supporting the ripe raspberry and blackberry fruit with bright acids and velvety tannins. Full-bodied and rich, it's long, picking up hints of licorice on the finish. (JC) Inner quote mark (8/2019)

93 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Warm cherry and plum paste flavors form the core, with melted red licorice, singed balsam and grilled herb notes. Reveals a gentle tug of earth at the very end. A strong effort for the vintage. Drink now through 2034. Inner quote mark (9/2019)
