Château Certan de May Pomerol 1982: This is a reminder of how great 1982 is for Pomerol. People talk about Petrus or Le Pin as benchmarks for the year (I prefer Lafleur) but this wine from Certan de May is very, very impressive. It shows an amazing complexity and subtlety with wonderful aromas and flavors of flowers and berries.

The full bottle exhibited a dense plum/purple color along with notes of cedar, forest floor, sweet jammy plums, black currants, licorice, and tobacco leaf. Full-bodied and powerful with high tannins as well as a rustic, massive mouthfeel and finish, it should be fully mature by 2015, and keep until 2030+. (RP) 93+

Full, deep red. Exotic aromas of roasted red berries, cherry, roast coffee and menthol. Ripe, dense and sweet, with inviting earth, truffle and chocolate flavors lifted by a whiff of tobacco leaf from the Cabernet Franc component. Impressively full in the mouth, but with the faint leafy edge contributing to the impression of firm structure. (ST)

96 points Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "Tasted at Pebbles/Zachy’s 1982 dinner in Hong Kong. This is the first time that I have encountered this legendary 1982 Pomerol and all I can say is yes, yes and YES! The perfume immediately informs you that the praise is justified, unfurling with gorgeous violet and black truffle aromas. There is real minerality here and wonderful poise. The palate is very well balanced: quite stern and aloof at the beginning but there is great fruit intensity and minerality that underpins this Certan-de-May. There is a sense of effortless harmony and refinement on the meaty, ferrous finish that is utterly seductive. This is a just a beautiful Pomerol, though I agree with “RP” that it has the substance of vivacity to go on and on and on. Magnificent!" (01/2013)
