2016 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru "Frémiets"

SKU #1431620 91-93 points Vinous

Bright medium ruby. Brooding aromas of black cherry, blueberry and violet. Dense, sappy Volnay with compelling sweetness to its dark berry fruit. Finishes with dusty, broad tannins and good saline lift. The estate lost 25% of this parcel to frost, but Guillaume d'Angerville told me that the ultimate crop was actually larger than he thought it would be during the summer. (ST) (1/2018)

90-93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

A background note of menthol sits atop the spicy combination of floral and the pure essence of dark pinot fruit. The highly energetic and equally pure middle weight flavors brim with minerality on the beautifully refined, saline and even firmer finish that also exhibits a trace of youthful austerity. This well-balanced effort is really quite lovely and very Frémiets in character. *Outstanding* (4/2018)

90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets offers a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, quite floral with hints of crushed violet and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasant fleshy mouthfeel. This is not a deep Fremiets, but there are fine-boned tannins and it is potentially a pretty and feminine Volnay with a touch of piquancy on the finish. Lovely. (NM) (12/2017)

91 points Decanter

Like the premier cru blend, Fremiets is quite fragrant and expressive this year, offering up notes of plum, raspberry, raw cocoa and a touch of violets. The wine is deeper, more concentrated and taut on the palate, with a firm chassis of tannin which is likely to become more integrated after racking and further élevage. Drinking Window 2024 - 2040. (10/2017)

91 points John Gilman

The 2016 Fremiets has a nice sense of black fruity sappiness to it on both the nose and palate. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a mix of cassis, black cherries, venison, espresso, dark sol tones, a dollop of spicy new oak and a topnote of fresh herbs. On the palate the wine is deep, full, pure and sappy, with good focus and grip and a long, ripely tannic finish. This will be very good in the fullness of time. 2025-2060. (12/2017)

Jancis Robinson

Bright mid crimson. Very expressive and pure on the nose. Bitter cherry. Very crystalline and pure and stony. Chapeau! 17/20 points. (JR) (6/2017)

K&L Notes

93 points Jasper Morris (MW) : "Mid slope, small stones, very little topsoil. Vibrant crimson purple with an exuberant dark raspberry nose, some youthful astringence with fresh mineral finish, perhaps a touch saline. But all the elements are there to make a fine Volnay." (1/2018)
