2016 Laventura Tempranillo Rioja

SKU #1430974 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The red 2016 Laventura Tempranillo matured in 500-liter oak vats with the lees to create a reductive atmosphere, as they want to avoid oxidation. The wine feels quite fresh; it's a wine with fruit, but somehow the grape is delicate. The oak polished the tannins, but the lack of oxygen—it was never racked—helps to preserve the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied, and the tannins are fine-grained and provide for a chalky texture and a mineral-like sensation. Very good indeed. 3,300 bottles were filled in December 2017. K&L Notes

Native South African Bryan MacRobert grew up in a farming family, and has been quietly making some of that country's best value wines. He fell in love with a girl from Rioja as well as the region's wines (we forget in which order) but quickly became fascinated with the inimitable terroirs and endless potential for wines in the region. A proponent, not only of organic viticulture, but also a strong believer in the importance of legacy organically cultivated vines on top quality sites, Bryan is picky about where he grows and sources vines. The winemaking is no frills but clearly well thought out and opinionated; think lots of smaller cement vats and wood in sizes no greater than 225L barriques. He's a fan of Stockinger cooperage. Particularly with the whites, these are wines where transparency, minerality, and acidity drive the style. From the winery: "This wine is made from Tempranillo the most planted variety in Rioja. Grapes are handpicked, sorted, destemmed and naturally fermented. The wine is aged for one year in 500-litre barrels. This wine has a medium ruby colour with primary fruit aromas of raspberries, redcurrant, red cherries, black cherries, black berries, and plums. Secondary aromas such as toast, vanilla, nutmeg and cloves due to the lees contact and ageing for one year in barrel. The palate is textured with good tannins. Good acidity, body and length."
