2017 Domaine Faiveley Mercurey 1er Cru "Clos des Myglands"

SKU #1430795 93 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark A tangy, succulent style, this red exhibits cherry, raspberry, currant, spice and stony mineral aromas and flavors. Elegant and linear, extending on the long, fruit-stained aftertaste. (BS, Web Only-2019) Inner quote mark

92 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark This combines red-berry perfume with some earthy power. Pretty concentrated and complex wine for the appellation, the rather polished tannins giving it nice textural complexity. Long and generous, but cool and slightly salty finish. Inner quote mark (1/2019)

Outer quote mark From a six-hectare parcel, the 2017 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos des Myglands is quite reminiscent of the 2009 rendition, opening in the glass with notes of cherries, black raspberries, dark chocolate and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and velvety, with a layered and nicely concentrated core, ripe acids and an expansive finish. (WK) Inner quote mark (7/2019)

K&L Notes

Faiveley’s new facility in the middle of Mercurey affords them the luxury of being able to pick fruit at its optimal level, without the worry of transporting it too far. A wine that straddles the line perfectly between old and new world with just enough fruit to and complexity to satisfy both the Burgundy enthusiast and novice, this is loaded with red and black fruits, supple tannins, and a long, sumptuous finish.

Faiveley is one of the great and largest domaine's in Burgundy and this wine is a perfect example of why they continue to dominate in the region. This is a Pinot of precision and beautiful expression, showing classic Burgundy flavors of black berry, black cherry, and raspberry with the intoxicating aromas of champignon, wet earth, fresh berries and savory spice. From a vintage that has plenty of immediately approachable red wines, enjoy now and put a few away to experience in another 5 years.

Absolutely gorgeous on the nose. Field flowers, cola berry, dark cherry and herbs. The texture is supple and rich with dark fruit and just a touch of savoriness. That richness is given a dose of freshness from great acidity on the back end. Overall, superb richness, balance and freshness from this single 1er Cru vineyard for under $50. Burgundy lovers rejoice!
