2018 Aphros "Ten" Loureiro Vinho Verde

SKU #1430740 90 points Wine Enthusiast

Fragrant and fruity, this very fresh wine has a strong mineral texture. The freshness gives way to a deeper, rich sense that brings out a more creamy character. It's ripe and rich at the end. (RV) (8/2014)

K&L Notes

Aphros wines are all produced from certified biodynamic grapes, in an area where farming this way, due to the humid climate, is not easy. Proprietor Vasco Croft is committed to biodynamics, and all of the Aphros wines are beautiful expressions of the terroir in the Lima sub-zone of Vinho Verde. "Ten" here refers to the very low 10% ABV. Produced from Loureiro grapes, which are picked earlier than usual, the wine is incredibly bright, with lip-smacking acidity and yet a balanced overall expression due to the very small amount of residual sugar. With a bit of bottle age this wine will put on a bit of weight, and show surprisingly rich, rounded fruit given the bright, punchy lemon-lime flavor profile. Delicious!

- Although quite small, Portugal produces a great variety of wines ranging from light and fizzy Vinho Verde to hearty and tannic Port. Portugal is Europe's fourth-largest wine-producing region, and has been exporting its wine since the 14th century. The Douro Valley of Portugal is the original and current home for the world's finest Port. The valley spans from east of the city of Oporto all the way to the border of Spain and is the country's best known wine region. Lesser-appreciated DOCs like Bairrada and Dão area also emerging for their fine, rustic reds.
