2017 Jacques Bavard Auxey-Duresses Rouge

SKU #1430181

Maison Jacques Bavard is a tiny négociant producer in Puligny-Montrachet. He comes from a long line of winegrowers and is dedicated to working with organic and biodynamic growers. We found him a few years ago on a tip and discovered the balance and freshness of his wines to be most impressive. Thanks to importing his wines directly, we have them available at a very modest price. It's been 20+ years since Christine and Jacques Bavard quit the restaurant business in Paris. They've since returned to Burgundy to devote their lives and time to making beautiful wine and creating a domaine for wine lovers to visit and to stay. Winery note: "We produce red wines made from the Pinot Noir grape , always 'worked' in this qualitative constraint that we impose on ourselves, both for the crisp maturity of the grapes we are looking for, and for their destination at the table, starter and dishes of medium power, allowing the wine to express its counterpoint to the dishes you cook."

Very pretty nose on this with candied cherry and strawberry, and subtle hints of thyme and other herbs. The wine is light weight and refreshing, but with serious fruit that is hoisted effortlessly by structuring acidity and tannins. This is the kind of wine you keep around for poultry dishes or ham, and that can be enjoyed year 'round. Once again, you just can't beat Bavard's Burgundy!

One of Burgundy’s hottest and most up-and-coming regions for values, Auxey-Duresses is known for being able to produce reds of impressive depth and character without breaking the bank—and the 2017 Jacques Bavard Auxey-Duresses Rouge is no exception. This wine has an abundance of black fruits, black tea, red apple, and fresh cherry flavors. The palate unwinds to reveal complex notes of fruit, coffee, and cola. This is a beautiful red that offers a deeper experience than the Bourgogne Rouge. If you’re looking for value in Burgundy, then Auxey-Duresses is the place you should be.

I have loved every vintage of this wine so far and I'm so pleased the 2017 has arrived. The aromas are beautiful, bursting with fresh picked berries and flowers. If you're making an assessment on the color alone, it would be easy to assume this is very light and delicate on the palate but there is in fact a lot of fruit and flavor here; wild strawberries, red cherries, cranberry preserves, and a dusting of cinnamon. The 2016 was a bit bigger and had more concentrated fruit. The 2017, according to M. Bavard, is more classic in style.
