2008 Glen Garioch 10 Year Old "Old Particular" Single Refill Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1430025

The beautiful Glen Garioch is one of the Scotland's first (founded officially 1797) and one of the few truly urban distilleries. Well, we should say suburban because the distillery sits just behind a quaint little neighborhood in the town of Oldmeldrum. Glen Garioch is one of those distilleries that's unmistakably malty. The confluence of the mineral rich water and squat short necked stills create a spirit that's got a powerful character. The unique maltiness gives it an unusual sense of place that few other distilleries can boast. Rich, complex, buttery and spicey--this lovely cask of Glen Garioch is a wonderful follow up to last year's lovely 8 year old. Somehow, despite the tariffs and other cost increases, we've managed to keep the price of this special cask the same as the younger offering. There are few better whiskies for your dollar in the store today.

During my first taste of this malt a few weeks ago, I mainly noticed all the hearty malt- the robust, savory character with that char and chocolate and spice. After some time open to the air, this has softened dramatically and begun to show the charming aspects that set Glen Garioch apart from other distilleries in the area. Even at 10 years old, this shows tremendous depth, evoking tall stalks of grain just before harvest and hills covered in heather. On the palate, the sweetness of the malt is more apparent, with honey-baked pear and peach, creamy custard, lemon peel and nutmeg. The finish retains the heat and char that I noticed the first time around, but much more fitting in the context. Like a soft cake soaked in brandy, it lets the alcohol burn linger at the back of the throat just enough to let you know what you're drinking. And this is frighteningly drinkable at 56% abv. Just give it a drop of water and some air, and you'll be delighted with the dram in your glass, especially at this price.

There's no secret to that fact that I'm a huge sucker for Glen Garioch. Part of that is the memories of some old glories I've been lucky enough to taste, but a bigger part is the quality and overt deliciousness that the distillery continues to produce. Often when we pick out Glen Garioch's we find a very forward maltiness, almost the fresh grain quality, that gives it a sense of place. This indeed is has a purity of malt that seems to be the hallmark of this wonderful old distillery, but this cask is so much prettier and rounder than the last few we've purchased. Instead of the hard edge earthy grain some of the younger casks exhibited, the nose is a mélange of sweet melted sugars, malt syrup, fresh bread and yellow fruit compote. On the palate a nuanced and generous fruit mingles with the almost Ovaltine maltiness. The softest lemon sponge cake and hints of spice and oak to finish. Just utterly balanced and forward without being overly powerful or brash. This is a dangerous drinker and at this price I'm loading up. We were able to get this on the shelf at the same price as last years 8 year and this one is much more approachable and forgiving. While a drop of water is never a bad idea, for once I like this young malt straight out of the bottle. Very little on the shelf for this price that delivers the same quality experience.

This single malt is pretty and sweet. The nose is expressive with floral and wax aromas. In the mouth it is soft, malty and sweet. With a splash of water, the nose stays the same and in the mouth it is the same flavor theme but has a creamy mouth feel with hints of honey. There is a long finish.

If you like to know you’re drinking Scotch, this is the whiskey for you. At this price point it’s hard to argue, while the dram is a bit hot, it’s packed with flavor and texture. The nose reminded me of mixing up my favorite chocolate malted powder drink as a kid with additional notes of lemon meringue, apricot pit, and chocolate cherries; after adding a few drops of water, more of the oak influence came through. Chocolate appeared again on the palate with almonds and a faint toffee note coupled with Asian pear and cinnamon spice. The finish is where that spice finally gets you as it builds up through the palate. Spicy cayenne eventually fades into milk chocolate and black plum skin. A fun and desert-like dram for a great price.

Biscuits and fresh cream abound. The core of the nose smells just like the fermentation room of the distillery - it's a complex heady aroma of wooden vats, malted barley, yeast, brioche, fresh cut fruits of every hue, a tinge of maple syrup, and buttermilk. At 56.3% ABV it packs a punch. With a drop of two of water it opens info a blossom honey filled sugar comb. The palate shows tons of vanilla and the finish is sweet without being cloying. For 50 bucks, this 10 year old single cask delivers on every level. The tiny distillery in Oldmeldrum is one of the most charming in Scotland, and it's whiskies like this that show why is has such a cult following.
