1994 Auchroisk 25 Year Old "Old Particular" K&L Exclusive Single Refill Hogshead Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Previously $130)

SKU #1429988

The most intimidating thing about this cask is its name. It's pronounced "Ah-thrusk." After that everything is easy. It was an easy decision to pick up this beauty. On specs alone it was a no brainer. It's not often we can offer that magical 25 year age statement for 130 bucks. One sniff of the glass and a quick taste and we confirmed we had to have it. Originally built by J&B, today Auchroisk is one of Diageo's workhorse distilleries in Speyside. In its younger forms it provides the nutty/spicy components to Johnnie Walker thanks to a fast and furious mash, fermentation, and boil. As a single malt, it's sometimes seen with The Singleton designation on bottles from the late '80s or more recently in the Flora and Fauna or Rare Malts collections. As a single malt over time that nutty and spicy character gives way to more honeyed and malt tones and even adds on a bit of fruit. This is what we have here: in a beautiful refill hogshead, the aged malt shines. Golden in color, aroma, and flavor, one sip of this gives the feeling of walking through a sunny field of grains after a light afternoon rain. At nearly 55% ABV there is an understated power, elegant and self assured. This is hands down one of the best deals of the year for well aged single malts.

I find Auchroisk's single malts go consistently underrated and under-the-radar. The wild and fruity character of their older stock is unmistakable, and like a siren's call, lulls me into a defenseless stupor; I simply must submit. The nose, awash with fragrant white flowers, honey and ginger gives way to a similarly concentrated palate. Glorious golden malt at the forefront with dried and baked fruit rounding out the middle- already there is a lot to love. Delightful spice and more ginger make for a fine counterpoint and tasty finish, albeit tantalizing; I immediately want to dive headlong back into the sticky sweet depths of this dram. Pear and berries on the exhale hint at the myriad dimensions contained therein. Though this runs a bit more than our previous barrels from this gem of a distillery, it is absolutely worth every penny.

The beautiful malts coming out of Auchroisk have always been a favorite here at K&L. We've had some good luck with a few casks over the years. But I don't think we've ever come across an Auchroisk with so much going on as this one. And yes it's more expensive than last year's 24 year, not only because we were able to work an incredible price on that, but also because this cask is particularly special. And while that 24 year was a good value, it doesn't stand up to the quality of this excellent barrel. There's also that magic at 25 years that makes everything in single malt just that little bit better. The nose starts with a big charred oak and vanilla character: malty, sweet, and creamy. The oak feels almost dominant at first and were it not for the gorgeous sweetness it might be over powering. One the palate, we get strong malt, sweet dried stones fruits and some gingery spice. And while I'd be perfectly content with this as it, it's not until you add a few splashes of water that we're really beginning to see it shine. Now we have this gorgeous crystallized lemon candy, gorgeous toasted malt, complex bitter herbs and ginger. On the palate it's bright and fresh, adding lemon drops and apricots to the already honeyed flavors. I usually expect the older ones to lower water less, but this one is completely perfect after a splash or two. Don't miss it.
