Chateau de Bligny "Clos du Chateau Bligny" 6 Cépages Brut Nature Champagne

SKU #1429834 93 points Wine Enthusiast

This wine provides a reminder that Champagne is not just Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. In addition, this blend incorporates Arbane, Pinot Blanc and Petit Meslier. The resulting wine is ripe, perfumed and full of concentrated creamed-apple flavors allied to tight acidity. It is ready to drink. (RV) (12/2018)

K&L Notes

This is one of the most exotic, complex bottles of Champagne in the store. The Chateau de Bligny is a big property, one of the largest growers in all of Champagne at 75 acres. This bottling is from one of the few Clos Champenois, a walled vineyard of just two acres that they bottle separately. The contents of this vineyard are co-pressed and co-fermented and composed of about 1/6 each Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Meunier, Arbanne, Meslier and Pinot Blanc. This is an exotic, powerful Champagne that has a ton of aroma and flavor. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

If you consider yourself a Champagne aficionado or a Champagne nerd (like most of us at K&L) then this offering from Bligny needs to be on your radar. The “6 Cepages” moniker refers to the fact that with this bottling Bligny blends Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Meunier, Arbanne, Meslier, and Pinot Blanc in even proportions. Fortunately, you don’t need to be a hardcore nerd to enjoy this bubbly at all. The nose is exotic and intoxicating with notes of tropical flowers, brioche, spicebox, fresh ginger, and heavy cream. The palate is also supple and spicy with a lot of minerality, baked apple, and mandarin orange all heading into a crazy long finish.

This is the most aromatic Champagne I have ever had. Its perfume is heady and lingering. It is made from six different grapes, hence the name "Cuvée Six Cépages." The grapes are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, Arbane, Pinot Blanc, and Petit Meslier. It's exotic, powerful, and a must-try for any fan of Champagne.

This a very cool champagne. Made from vineyards in an actual 'Clos' designation that has been around since the Cistercien Monks put it there hundreds of years ago. The wine is a bit different in terms of grape makeup as it uses 6 of the 7 permitted varieties in Champagne and are an even sixth of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay, Arbane, Petit Meslier and Pinot Blanc. The wine is wonderfully vibrant with a soft floral component and a beautiful ginger and curry zip to it that I found especially intriguing. If you're craving something different, Clos du Bligny will scratch that itch.

This is one of only a few bottlings of Champagne that includes the lesser-known grapes of Champagne. A six-way split between Arbonne, Petit Meslier, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Pinot Blanc. The wine is floral and fruity with a waxy note. The palate is beautifully balanced with notes of vanilla, cream, and stone fruit. There really aren't many Champagnes like this, and with the supply of these lesser-known grapes dwindling, we may not see this in the future!
