2017 Jeff Carrel "Les Darons" Languedoc Rouge

SKU #1427688 91-93 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The 2017 Languedoc Les Darons is made from 75% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 5% Carignan that’s mostly from older vines in the Minervois. It saw a touch of whole clusters in the fermenters and is still aging all in concrete tanks. It's deep purple (almost inky) and offers a sensational perfume of blueberries, blackberries, licorice, ground pepper, and earth. Deep, full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, and long, it shows the purity and sexiness of the 2017 vintage and is going to be a killer value. Inner quote mark (6/2019)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Ripe mulberries and black cherries abound in the 2017 Les Darons. It's medium to full-bodied, with touches of leather and smoke evident as well (despite being entirely unoaked), giving it an attractive savory complexity that's rare at this price point. (JC) Inner quote mark (5/2019)

90 points Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark A blend of Grenache, Syrah and Carignan from Minervois, Corbières and La Clape, this is as saturated with sloe-berry flavor as it is bright and lifted. It smells of cedar fronds and lavender and tastes of berries and earth, with a cool-stone feel that makes it refreshing. Inner quote mark (6/2019)

K&L Notes

Parisian Jeff Carrel was looking to make wines and found his way to the south of France where he has achieved some great status as a roving winemaker. Often partnering with importer Dan Kravitz of Hand Picked Selections (the importer of this wine), Jeff put together the delicious "Les Darons." It is a dual homage meaning "parents" in his native neighborhood in Paris and also referencing Grenache and Carignan, the parent grape varieties to all red wines in Languedoc-Roussillon. The fruit comes from Laure-Minervois and from vines that are 40+ years old. This year's blend is a 75% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 5% Carignan. The grapes are destemmed before fermentation, the wine sees no oak and is bottled ready for your immediate consumption. Pure deliciousness. (Keith Mabry, K&L French Regional buyer)

Once again, Jeff Carrel impresses us with another amazing and delicious value. Year after year this Grenache dominant blend flies off our shelves faster than we can restock it. This is a full bodied wine with pure, unadulterated fruit that bursts with flavor! Not a speck of oak here and there is an overall freshness that makes this a pleasure to drink with or without food. Try with chimichurri steak!

I have always been a fan of the Jeff Carrel wines. I must say that each year, they get better and better. What is even more magical is the price has stayed the same. This is one of those wine that way over delivers on the price. Perfect for parties or a quiet Tuesday night with Netflix. A pop of mineral with amazing dark and red fruit aromas at first sniff. Rich but balanced array of bright, juicy black fruit flavors that carry through on the palate to the long finish. Trust me this is a must have for everyone's wine rotation.

The Les Darons by Jeff Carrel has developed a bit of a cult following, especially in our LA store. When asked for, they say where is that Steve Carrel wine? Just so you know, there is no known relation. But people love it and year after year, it provides exceptional value. The 2017 is bursting with red fruit and just offers the most pleasing and generous weight on the palate. Not too heavy, not too light, this is the just right style of everyday wine drinking. You'll need a case or two to enjoy over the next few months for sure. Another outstanding bargain from value-maestro Jeff Carrel (again, no relation to Steve Carrel)!
