2015 Dierberg Estate "Dierberg Vineyard" Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir (Elsewhere $45)

SKU #1427609 94 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2015 Pinot Noir Dierberg Vineyard is a real standout. Plush, dark and expressive, the Dierberg is an explosive wine that shows this Santa Maria site off at its best. Floral and spiced notes wrap around a core of intense inky blue/purplish fruit. Time in the glass brings out a more delicate side. There is just so much to admire in the 2015. Outer quote mark Baked black-cherry and plum aromas meet with star anise, hot gingerbread and wet slate on the fairly opulent, very delicious nose of this bottling. It's more tightly wound on the palate, where cherry and black raspberry are lifted by baking spice. It's the pitch perfect acidity and tannic edge that are most impressive. Outer quote mark The 2015 Pinot Noir Dierberg Vineyard comes from the estate vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley and was aged 14 months in 25% new French oak. Medium ruby-colored, with notes of cherries, mulberries, forest floor, and spice, it's silky, lightly textured, and elegant on the palate, with the charming nature of the vintage balanced nicely by plenty of tannins and acidity. One of the most highly expressive and utterly delicious Pinots I've tasted in some time. This is just an out and out charmer. Big, explosive aromatics of brambly red fruits, sweet baking spices, crushed flowers, cut hedgerow. A beautifully faithful expression of Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir with everything turned up to 11! That's not to say this wine is overly ripe or extracted...everything is in perfect balance...it's just very perfumed and flavorful across the board. Every staff member I poured it for was taken aback at the quality of the wine. Our price is the best out there and that makes this wine an absolute must buy.

Wine should always be this good. The explosive, boysenberry nose is continued and answered with ginger and tea leaf on the palate, perfectly married by the short note of anise that bridges the two wonderfully. That classic Pinot spicy note is notable, but softened by the black rock minerality. Pinot is in a really great place right now and this is another fine addition to the field.
