2017 Sierra de Toloño Rioja

SKU #1427466 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The Sierra de Toloño, a village wine from the mountain vineyards, was the first wine produced here. The 2017 Sierra de Toloño has freshness and intense red fruit, and even in this northern part, the wine and the zone have some Mediterranean characteristics; it's a soft and juicy red with floral and red fruit aromas and round tannins polished by eight months in barrique. This is a fresh and easy-drinking Tempranillo with the roundness of a warm vintage in a cool zone. 26,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2017. (LG) (6/2019)

K&L Notes

Made from small parcels of Tempranillo grown in the very foothills that give the winery it’s name. Sandra Bravo wants to make fresh wines that speak specifically of where they come from, Rioja Alavesa. The elevation, the high concentration of limestone in the soil, the cooling winds from the Tolono mountains give the fruit clarity and depth. The spontaneous fermentation and minimal intervention, and less than a year in older french barrels help soften the tannin and focus the fruit into a wine that speaks of the varietal and Alavesa.

Sandra Bravo is working with some top-notch fruit from high elevation sites in Rioja Alavesa. I am a huge fan of her winemaking philosophy, which is to highlight the natural acidity and purity of her grapes. This 100% tempranillo shows juicy cherry and blackberry, with pungent, fresh floral aromas. Aging in neutral oak allows the fruit to remain prominent against the backdrop subtly savory oak. This is the perfect Rioja to enjoy right now while you let your Gran Reservas mature.
