2015 Galia "Clos Santuy" Tierra de Castilla y León (Previously $75)

Outer quote mark The 2015 Clos Santuy is produced with the grapes from an ungrafted, head-pruned 1.12-hectare vineyard in the village of Piquera de San Esteban in the province of Soria, just outside the limits of Ribera del Duero, so it's sold as Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León. The vineyard is planted at some 968 meters in altitude on shallow sandstone soils and is enclosed by a dry stonewall. Bougnaud has been working and vinifying this plot separately since 2010 and noticed its personality and aging potential, but this 2015 is the first vintage to be released. This is a textbook elegant and fresh Ribera from the cooler part; it's ripe and powerful but really in balance and includes some 10% of white Albillo grapes that surely add to the silky texture and the fresh sensation on the palate. What a portfolio Galia showed in 2015, and this jewel of the crown filled some 1,073 bottles in September 2017. Bravo! Drink through 2028. (LG) Inner quote mark (8/2018)

It is hard to comprehend that Ribera del Duero the official DO has only existed since 1982, but they have been making wine in this region for centuries and one of the greatest wines of all Spain, Vega Sicilia, for well over 150 years. It's also home to relatively new Producer Galia. This is Jerome Bougnaud's project—not familiar? If you like Ribera del Duero he has worked with Peter Sissek at Pingus and Quinta Sardonia. While working there he came up with his project by seeking out small old vine parcels in and around the Duero. All of his parcels are old, some almost 100 years, all have a calcareous elements to their soils, all with elevations between 750-1000 meters elevation. They are mostly Tempranillo but there is a little Garnacha and Albillo in the mix, and some are ungrafted. The raw material going into these wines is amazing. The winemaking, a small amount of new oak in 600L barrel and small portions of whole cluster, elevate and focus these wines. These are wines of purity and power with dazzling aromatics and seductive length. All of their wines are Vino de Mesa even if they could technically be Ribera del Duero. This is not a criticism of the region, but rather an elevation of the sites outside of it.

Bougnaud's "tete cuvee." This is the most pointed showcase of his pedigree, with a serious approach that will only get better with years. An exotic nose with both umami and sweet teriyaki over slight topical fruit is only a precursor to a spiced, dusty palate that carries soft raspberry and ceder plank tones. The juice is entirely pleasant now, but will evolve for a decade or even two, with tons of potential still in the glass.

Every winemaker has a voice, a little something in all of their wines that, if you pay close attention, is there almost like a signature on a piece of art. Mr. Bougnaud has this in spades with this savory umami, soy quality that is just so enticing. Unmarred by unnecessary oak, the wine is beautifully balanced, bold, and velvety; with rich, dark blackberry, plum skin, and a hint of chocolate. The wine has seemingly no end, evolving to a warm and winter spiced note on the back palate with a touch of leather and tobacco. I have heard Tinto Fino compared to Barolo before and I now understand why. What a bottle!
