2017 João Cabral Almeida "Camaleão" Minho Alvarinho

SKU #1426388 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2017 Camaleão Alvarinho is very dry and comes in at 13% alcohol. Despite how dry it is, it seems fruity and rich, bursting with flavor. Not surprisingly, this adds some concentration to the blend (Alvarinho tends to produce deeper and richer wines). Showing beautiful purity of fruit and ripeness, this is pretty sexy. As it sits in the glass, it warms up and develops beautifully too, the underlying acidity and freshness coming closer to the foreground. Drink through 2030. (MS) (6/2018)

90 points Wine Enthusiast

Named after the chameleons that skitter throughout the region in the summer, this wine is a creamy, fruity take on Alvarinho. It has a crisp texture, apple fruits and tight mineral acidity. It will be better with some more bottle age, so drink from 2019. (RV) (10/2018)

90 points Wine Spectator

This fresh white is light-bodied but shows concentration, with creamy apple, spice and kumquat notes. Underpinnings of floral and mineral add elegance to the long finish. 500 cases imported. (GS) (7/2018)

K&L Notes

The winemaking concept of J. CABRAL ALMEIDA WINES is to demonstrate the potential of different grape varieties in different terroirs. When he's not in the vineyard and in the winery,?João?is teaching at the Escola Agraria de Viseu (Dao), as Professor of Viticulture, Vineyard Management. Joao is a natural viticulturist and terroir hunter, discovering neglected parcels of vineyards throughout multiple regions and coaxing the very best out of each vineyard. His Camaleao project has shown the potential of Alvarinho outside of the typical Moncao e Melgaco sub-region. His Camaleao brand has also helped the current and revolutionary re-branding of Vinho Verde as a DOC of high quality and potential.? The Camaleao Alvarinho was made from grapes selected from three separate parcels. The rich almost oily texture comes from Baião, the minerality an almost salty freshness from Felgueiras and the floral, exotic apple-like aromas are from Amarante. This is a delicious in a combination of terroirs that result in a vivid wine that makes an immeadiate impression. This 100% is unlike it's more Northern neighbors.

This wine was one of the stars for me at a recent staff tasting and showed well when it was on the stage with other first class wines. It has a lot to offer with its beautiful aromatics, and lean and crisp body. It is alvarinho at its best. This wine is complex with a wonderful integration of fruit, mineral notes and a pleasant crisp finish.

Portugal is Europe's fourth-largest wine-producing region, and has been exporting its wine since the 14th century. The Douro Valley of Portugal is the original and current home for the world's finest Port. The valley spans from east of the city of Oporto all the way to the border of Spain and is the country's best known wine region. Lesser-appreciated DOCs like Bairrada and Dão area also emerging for their fine, rustic reds.
