Gold Medal and 92 points, 2019 Press Democrat North Coast Wine Competition. Winery's note: "Designed for those of us who love depth and complexity. We start with a base of briary, juicy Zinfandel and layer in depth from complementary varieties including tangy Carignane, floral Malbec, and meaty Syrah. To harness all the volume and tame the power we age in French oak, which imparts robust vanilla, amber honey, and roasted hazelnut flavors as well as a velvety mouthfeel."

Vanilla, hot chocolate, candied rose petals on the nose. Sweet, dark, ripe cherries on the palate. Silky, full body, and a smooth finish. Sometimes you just want a beautiful, rich, and delicious wine to wind down and feel happy. If you like The Prisoner wine but want to spend half the price, this is the wine for you.

You could make the argument that a zinfandel based blend is the prototypical californian wine. And if the success of brands like Ridge, the Prisoner, Bedrock, Orin Swift can tell us anything, it's that they're perhaps some of California's most adored wines. The Angels and Cowboys Red Blend follows in that California tradition offering big fruit, rich mouthfeel, and warms spice. It's a delicious wine at a killer bargain.

"You can tell where a working cowboy is from by the crease in his hat." Never knew this factoid about the cowboy way, but of course there are plenty of cowboy factoids that have evaded me in my mundane city-slicker life. I may not know the difference between las chaparreras (aka 'chaps') and chapstick, but I do know something about wine, and would hit the trail with a bottle wrapped in a bedroll of this supple as a worn saddle red any day of the week. Born of all the right stuff, brambly Zinfandel, spicy Syrah, robust Carignane, plush Petite Sirah and velvety Malbec, one smooth sip might spur you on to drink more! Time to round up all your friends.....

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. - With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. - Second in fame only to Napa, this "other" valley offers just about every climate and topography imaginable. From its cool and fog-enshrouded coastal regions on the far west, to the sprawling Alexander Valley on the boarder of Napa and the many little dips and peaks in between, Sonoma has been a vital wine-grape-growing region since the mid 1800s. Important sub-AVAs include Chalk Hill (known for chardonnay and sauvignon blanc), Dry Creek Valley (where zin is king) Knights Valley (largely cabernet land), Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast (both celebrated pinot and chardonnay zones).
