Hidalgo Pastrana Manzanilla Pasada Sanlucar de Barrameda (375ml)

SKU #1425469 95 points Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark Pasada is an old style of Manzanilla being resurrected in Jerez. Normally, a Manzanilla will have three years of aging; a pasada continues to rest in the solera as the veil of flor begins to fade. This allows the wine to begin a slow oxidation process, going beyond fruit into more complex aromas. Pastrana, selected from an extremely chalky parcel in the Pago Miraflores, is one of the best examples of this style on the market. The wine ages under its veil of flor for 12 years before bottling en rama (with minimal filtration). It’s surprising that after all this time, it still feels agile, refreshing everything in its path. Its long barrel time shows in its depth and strength, notes of almonds mixed with scents of woodland mushrooms and ash. A wine of meditation. Inner quote mark (8/2017)

Outer quote mark The golden-colored NV Manzanilla Pasada Pastrana is a Manzanilla produced from Palomino grapes from the Pastrana vineyard within the pago Miraflores, aged under flor, but finishing its upbringing in a semi-oxidative way as the flor weakens, starts to die off, and bottled with a total average of 12 year of age. It has a distinct nose redolent of peanuts, smoke, bitter almonds, quince and olives, combining biological and oxidative notes. The palate shows a medium- to full-bodied wine, very powerful and strongly-flavored, ending with a smoky finish. A fine nose and a powerful palate. A unique wine. 24,000 bottles are produced yearly. Drink 2013-2015. (MS) Inner quote mark (8/2013)

Outer quote mark Oily aromas of almond extract and peanut butter are earthy, a tad briny and classic in terms of offering buttery, yeasty notes of flor. This feels round, oily and deeply textured. Flavors of almond skins, sea salt and dried stone fruits finish loud and long. (MS) Inner quote mark (5/2016)

Outer quote mark Rich and racy, this combines floral chamomile and honeysuckle notes with bracing fleur de sel and lemon pith flavors, all backed by hints of singed almond and wet straw. Shows lovely range and drive. Drink now. (JM) Inner quote mark (6/2017)

K&L Notes

The finest lots of Manzanilla from Hidalgo's best vineyard, the Pastrana, are set aside for extra aging to make this Pasada. This wine has an average age of 10 years, twice as old as most Manzanilla soleras. The result is a wine with all of the briny freshness of this special terroir in Sanlucar de Barrameda, but with an added weight and richness which truly makes this one of the finest dry sherries money can buy. It's a real stunner and highly recommended.
