2012 Nicolas Maillart "Franc de Pied" Champagne

SKU #1425060 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark From an ungrafted Pinot Noir vineyard planted in 1973 (on sandy soils) and picked on September 25th at 11.2 potential alcohol, the 2012 Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs Premier Cru les Francs de Pied offers very clear, fresh, precise and delicate fruit on the nose. Fermented 100% in used oak barrels, this is a pure, highly finessed, very elegant and terribly salty Pinot Noir with a very long, complex yet pure, tensioned and very long finish. This is well structured and persistent. (SR) Inner quote mark (8/2018)

The backstory is fun, but the wine really sings in the glass. Incredibly clean, easy drinking champagne with a complexity underneath it all you can choose to pay attention to, or not depending on the moment. Top end saline quality with spiced pear and apples brushing against the baked, bready finish that is medium length but incredible satisfying.

The interesting name refers to the exceptional fact that this is a rare Champagne grown completely on vines with their original French roots - meaning that these vines are ungrafted because they escaped the scourge of phylloxera with the help of the extremely sandy soils on this site. It’s 100% Pinot Noir, 100% barrel fermented, and 0 dosage. The nose is fresh with ripe pear and orange blossom. The palate offers deeper complexity with baking spices, salty minerality, and fizzy lemon drops.

Meaning "of the French foot", this wine is a tribute to the French rootstocks that sit on the base of the vines. They survived phylloxera in their sandy soils and did not need to undergo grafting to American rootstocks. There are very few ungrafted vineyard Champagnes available today and quite a rare occurrence. 100% barrel fermented Pinot Noir with zero dosage, this comes from a single plot and is very limited in its production. Truly a beautiful, artisinal wine from our newest direct import, this is a special bottling.
