2018 Domaine de la Noblaie "Le Temps des Cerises" Chinon

SKU #1425044

93 points Chris Kissack, Winedoctor.com: "Jérôme has proven himself with this cuvée, which in recent vintages has been a stellar 'entry-level' wine. The 2018 vintage does not disappoint in this regard. Tasted twice. From the first bottling, the bottle opened the day before my visit, this has a softer and more floral nose, but presents a delicate, pencil-fine style on the palate, with a lightly chalky structure. From the second bottling, which was completed just ten weeks after the first, the bottle opened on the day of tasting, this presents a darker and more savoury character, with nuances of dried cherry skin. The palate follows up in a very soft, polished and plump fashion, overall a very easy and accessible style. There is a fine grip beneath it, but the focus here is certainly the fruit. Lovely finish too. This is another exceptionally good domaine cuvée. 93/100" (11/2019)

There is something to be said about the reemergence of Chinon as a category. They are versatile and pure and deliver at a price that is well below what the market should be demanding for them. The wines from Noblaie are maybe one of the best places to start if you're not familiar. The purity of fruit is exquisite. They are clean and precise and the wines hum with vibrant red and black fruits with those classic savory notes in the background. The Temps des Cerises just about delivers everything I want in this category. From black cherry to violets to a smoky rosemary, it is explosive on the nose and sings with a harmony that only Cabernet Franc can deliver. It has freshness and a medium bodied texture that creates a sumptuous food wine through and through. It will pair with such versatility - from duck, to turkey, to smoked fish, to a pork loin, there is very little I could not find to enjoy this wine with.

The 2018 Domaine de la Noblaie manages to walk an absolute tightrope between Old World and modern styled Chinon. The nose on this is clean and full, with plenty of dark fruits and touches of bell pepper. On the palate, the fruit definitely delivers, but there are also more interesting elements deeper in the glass. There’s a wet slate component. There’s a touch of earth and forest floor. And just enough tannin and structure to give it some heft. This is a perfect dinner party wine. Interesting and fun, but well enough within the standard wheelhouse, so that everyone will be pleased.

Classic, benchmark Chinon. I love how expressive this wine is, from the very first pour. Explosive, dark berry fruits, dusty spices, and subtle herbaceous notes mingle well with the perfectly ripe fruit. Soft, textural and generous, this also maintains the perfect mid-weight character of the appellation. Very versatile food wine. Utterly delicious and quaffable.

The nose of this wine is so inviting, layers of black pepper, currant and touches of garrigue. On the palate the wine shows wonderful richness and excellent balance carrying those same black pepper and currant flavors with a supple yet forceful palate presence. The finish has real lift and energy while luxuriating in a secondary richness, I really like this wine, one of the best drinking Chinon I’ve had in some time.

Deep dark and brooding. This wine has plush tannins, dark black and blue fruits with deep earthy aromas. Full bodied and aromatic, this wine is a bit plusher than Noblaie's other offerings, certainly a great stepping stone for fans of full bodied cabs but are interested in what the Loire Valley can offer.
