2015 Terroir al Limit "Torroja" Priorat

SKU #1424436 93 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Plenty of blue fruit and granite aromas with hints of violets on the nose. Full body, firm and linear with very fine tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Vertical and focused. Inner quote mark (7/2017)

Outer quote mark Dominik Huber selects Garnacha and Cariñena from vineyards between 50 and 70 years old for this village wine. He begins the vinification with whole clusters, letting ambient yeasts do the work, then moves the juice into cement tanks and foudres to finish fermenting. It’s a pure and deliciously fresh expression of Priorat, the flavors focused on ripe red fruit, with delicate floral and herbal notes in a generous texture. There’s a sense of the region’s slate soils in the wine’s mineral tones but, at the same time, it’s easy and refreshing to drink. Inner quote mark (10/2017)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark A tad lower in acidity but surprisingly fresh, the 2015 Torroja Vi de Vila is fruit-driven with a caressing texture. It is a 50/50 blend of Cariñena and Garnacha from different vineyards on slate llicorella soils, fermented in oak and matured in foudre until bottling in late June 2016. It's a little closed, possibly because of the recent bottling, as Dominik likes to work in a reductive way, which in the long term adds ageability in bottle. There's something savory in the nose here, perhaps iodine, hints of licorice and a mix of flowers. It's very tasty, with deep flavors and very good persistence. This has great elegance and freshness. There are 16,800 bottles produced. This is great for a slightly warmer vintage. Here the aim is also to reach around 20,000 bottles per vintage and stop there. (LG) Inner quote mark (10/2016)

92 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Brilliant ruby color. Highly perfumed aromas of ripe red berries, candied lavender, incense and allspice, with a smoky mineral overtone. Sappy and energetic in the mouth, offering appealingly sweet raspberry and cherry flavors that slowly put on weight while maintaining vivacious character. The floral quality repeats emphatically on the finish, which clings with real tenacity and persistent spiciness. (JR) Inner quote mark (4/2019)

92 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Rose and violet aromas sit comfortably with tight, gritty cherry and plum scents. A tight medium-to-full palate is the staging ground for fresh plum and berry flavors that are powerful but not heavy. A long, warming finish maintains the wine's core potency. Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark A blend of Carinyena (Carignan) and Garnatxa (Grenache) hand-harvested in crates of 10 kg. Vines are 20–60 years old. Carinyena (Carignan) grows on slate soils, Garnatxa (Grenache) on slate and clay. Traditional French winemaking, whole bunches are trampled softly inside the fermentation tanks, moving the oxygen with a small carbon dioxide hose. Spontaneous fermentation, pumping over is not done if it is not necessary. Production of 18,000 bottles. The nose is very open, showing cedar, cloves, pencil lead and a herbaceous touch. Slightly shy, needs time to open up. Less extracted, yet much more refined than the average Priorat. It lingers on the palate with finesse. Deep herbal notes on the finish. Smooth. 17/20 points. (FC) Inner quote mark (6/2018)

Terroir al Limit has been one of my favorite producers over the last few years. The no-compromise approach turns a lot of Priorat stereotypes on their head. This is a beautifully expressive wine with floral, spice, and red fruit notes that are echoed in a lively, fresh, and complex palate. Medium bodied, there is a purity and spine of acidity that makes me think of elegant, traditional Châteauneuf that exudes depth over weight. Still, it shows a unique character all its own, which makes it a great wine for those looking to explore the best of terroir-driven Priorat.

At their best, the wines of Priorat can blow you away with power even as they impress with a finesse and poise usually found in much smaller, delicate wines. At their, best the wines of Priorat are also usually found with a price tag that matches that level of routine excellence. The "Torroja" bottling from Terroir al Limit captures the character and verve of Priorat perfectly, with dark black fruit notes and lifted acidity which bodes well for the bottle's future. The licorice, saline finish is simply phenomenal, and the longer the bottle is open, the cassis, herbal mid-palate develops even more personality. Cold winter nights need warm hearty bottles; this should be a couple of yours.

For those of you in the know Priorat needs no introduction, but for the uninitiated this is a gem of a region that never seems to get the attention that its cousin to the northwest, Rioja, gets. This blend of Garnacha Tinta, with just a splash of Cinsault, has a nose full of strawberry and licorice candy, cracked black pepper, dust, and a note of redwood bark. Nostalgic, warm, and welcoming, this wine is so inviting! The palate is rustic. A bright hit of red fruit fades quickly into the pepper, and smoked wood notes come through with hints of cured meat. A savory finish. Medium-bodied reds like this are always so much more approachable and equipped for a wide variety of circumstances, it amazes me they aren't the most popular wines in the world!
