2017 Moulin de la Gardette "Tradition" Gigondas

SKU #1424286 93 points Decanter

Grown on clay-limestone and marl, the fruit is hand-picked with no destemming, and is aged in old foudres. The wine is pretty, bright and open, with raspberry, strawberry and violet fruits. It's barely medium-bodied, but has a lovely expression of fresh and easy red berry fruits, accompanied by a juicy berry acidity and gentle blackberry-skin tannins on the finish. An easy-going and highly drinkable Gigondas. Just lovely. (MW) (10/2018)

The classic 2017 Gigondas Tradition cuvée from this estate is a real winner as well as a smoking value. A blend of 80% Grenache and 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre that wasn’t destemmed and was aged all in foudre, it boasts a deep purple color as well as full-bodied aromas and flavors of ground pepper, incense, garrigue, and assorted sweet black fruits. This rounded, sexy, seamless 2017 has polished tannins, a great mid-palate, and a finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. Drink this beauty any time over the coming decade. Drink through 2029. (9/2019)

The aromas that I found exotic and lavender-like last year are now more mundane notes of damp hay and herbs. The 2017 Gigondas Tradition still has plenty of ripe cherry and raspberry fruit, and it remains full-bodied, creamy and lush, though with perhaps a touch of warmth on the finish. (JC) (8/2019)

Brilliant violet color. Suave, highly perfumed scents of red berry liqueur, exotic and smoky minerals, along with a lively floral overtone. Offers appealingly sweet black raspberry and lavender pastille flavors that are sharpened by white pepper and mineral flourishes. The berry and floral notes repeat strongly on a very long, supple finish that's framed by smoothly interwoven tannins. (JR) (2/2020)

K&L Notes

Jean-Baptiste Meunier is the fifth generation winemaker behind the great property of Moulin de la Gardette in the Rhone region of Gigondas. We have been working with him since the mid-90s and the wines have always been some of our favorites from the area. The region itself has stepped out of the shadow of neighboring Chateauneuf du Pape, creating wines of intensity and flavor that are distinctly their own. Gigondas has more south facing slopes and higher elevations as well as varied soils that help distinguish the region. The "Tradition" is a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah from vines averaging an age of 40 years. It is aged for about 18 months in mostly used foudre and demi-muid before bottling. This wine reminded my why I love Rhone reds so much. It strikes the ideal balance of opulence and structure and delivers exceptional complexity. This classic blend weds delicious red and black fruit flavors with additional subtle notes of pepper, olive, smoke and dried herbs. The warmth and personality of the 2017 vintage shine through and make this one of the finer Gigondas we've had of late.

I can talk about how impressed, intrigued and satisfied I am with this baby Châteauneuf du Pape. Pleasant aromas of freshly watered lawn, white pepper followed by an amazingly powerful but balanced flavors of black Currant, Turkish coffee, Kalamata olives, and savory spices. This vintage is outstanding and this is truly a special wine. Drink some now and hold on to a few bottles or a few cases for that later super special occasion in life.

This could be the bottling of this wine that I have every tried, I have been with K&L for a while, so I have tried quite a few. If it is not the best, it is definitely my favorite. Lifted dark fruits with spice and earth. On the palate it is spicy and rich without being heavy and has layer and layers of spice and fruit. This is solid and intense with a very nice finish. Not as monumental as last vintages Ventabren, but way more drinkable.

Another powerhouse wine from one of my favorite producers is back and better than ever. This vintage has a striking combination of deep, black cherry, raspberry and plum fruits, smoke, spice and herbs. The texture is luscious and there is good fruit concentration here but everything is still bright and lifted. All of the elements are so well-balanced and crafted with elegance. This wine is exquisite.

The 2017 vintage is another benchmark for Moulin de la Gardette. I first tasted this wine out of barrel last year and was blown away by the richness and intensity. The vintage was a drought year, so the wine had a lot of dry extract and concentration. As with most of winemaker Jean-Baptiste's wines though, they get more elegant and refined as they mature before and after bottling. I revisited it again earlier this year and true to form it showed that concentration but much more refined qualities. A panoply of spices and savory black fruit emerged. Now that's it finally here, one more taste and it is showing the best yet. This is pure and expressive Gigondas. The garrigue notes have emerged, showing fragrant floral and dried savory, thyme and fennel. All paired with that elegant black fruit and you will agree, this is another great release from Moulin de la Gardette.

Moulin de la Gardette is always my benchmark for Gigondas. And as for Gigondas itself, it’s a wine I’m drinking a lot more of these days. As prices in Chateauneuf creep higher and higher, I have found myself fleeing to Gigondas. The cepage is typically similar, but the aromatics, structure, and the fact that these are still humble, regional wines that deliver huge on quality are all a big draw for me. As for Gardette, their wines are simply the best of the pack. Black fruited with layers upon layers of blackberry coulis, iron, and depth like the bottom of a well. On the palate more charcoal and smoke intermix with fruit, well-set with structure. A big wine that shows off the excellence of Gigondas.

This cuvee has become a "Tradition" at K&L. If you haven't yet tasted this phenomenal Gigondas from this stalwart producer, you must. It is truly one of our best deals in the Rhone and continues to delight year after year. Stylistically Moulin de la Gardette walks a great balance between open, accessible fruit, and a more rustic, gamey side. It's a beautiful marriage of the two, and has a great all around appeal.
