The Desmeures family of Domaine des Remizières are fourth-generation winemakers who originally sold grapes to the local cooperative. After completing their winery in 1974, the family began production at their new property. The estate is now managed by Phillipe Desmeures, his daughter, Emilie, and son, Christophe. They have expanded to 30 hectares with vineyards in Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Hermitage. Emilie now oversees the winemaking, with her brother Christophe tending to the vineyards. We were excited to add them to our lineup of Direct Imports last year. The basic Crozes-Hermitage comes from the hills of Crozes, on clay-limestone soils with bits of galets (stones) scattered throughout the vineyards. They use 100% destemmed Syrah grapes, then age in large oak casks. About as close to a pure expression of Syrah one could hope to find from this often-overlooked wine region. Praise for the producer from Wine Advocate: "One of my favorite Crozes-Hermitage estates is the Domaine des Rémizières...This estate needs to be on every reader’s short list." (JD, 12/2015)

The entry-level 2017 Domaine des Rémizières Crozes-Hermitage is pure pepper and spice. It’s a delightful Syrah rendition that will make the perfect complement to your everyday dining. For well under $20, this bottling has always over-delivered.

What a knock out value syrah. When you want to drink rhone on a weeknight, but still want that gamey meatiness, hints of smoke, sweet black fruit and black pepper with a nice mineral undertone, this is your wine! A perfect pairing for grilled meats and sauteed mushrooms.

One of the areas I focus on collecting is wines of the northern Rhone, and the Remizieres Crozes is a staple of my collection. The '17 is dark and brooding with an earthy profile displaying tar, smoke, and blue fruits. This is everything I like in a Crozes-Hermitage. Fully concentrated on the palate with and tannin that drips down the palate. Look elsewhere for Crozes that is plump and obvious, the 2017 Remizieres is proper Crozes-Hermitage from a perennially awesome producer.
