2018 Montmassot Picpoul de Pinet

The appellation of Picpoul de Pinet covers about 3,000 acres just off the coast of the Mediterranean. It is famous for two things, oysters and this wine of origin Picpoul. Picpoul itself is the grape and means "lip stinger," which has become a running joke in our Hollywood store. Whenever we taste a new Picpoul we ask each other if it "pics your poul?" We want to know if it has the vibrancy and minerality that are the hallmarks of the region. That brings us to the Montmassot, which is produced at the local cooperative in the village of Florensac. It is sourced from 40 acres of their best vineyards of predominately clay and limestone. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tank, spending about 4 months on the lees with no malolactic to preserve their freshness and nerve. Bright and citrusy, with a hint of briny fresh-from-the-sea succulence, this refreshing white is a summertime VIP.

The Montmassot Picpoul is a lovely choice for those looking for a casual crisp white wine. After a pretty, fruity nose greets you at the door, a crisp and clean taste welcomes you in. Enjoy notes of tropical fruit, grapefruit peel, a briny salinity, and a touch of honey in this stunning $10.99 bottle. As is traditional in the area, this would be a fabulous pairing for oysters.

Letting the wine sit in the glass for a moment, I was greeted with a tropical nose filled with pineapple, grapefruit zest and hints of white flowers. As often happens, the palate is not quite as fruit-forward as the nose, but still echoes of sweet tropical fruits mixed with grapefruit and floral notes. All in all a very pretty wine and a beautiful expression of Picpoul De Pinet.
