2017 Cooperativa Cristo Del Humilladero "Granito del Cadalso" Garnacha Vinos de Madrid

SKU #1423865 92 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark From a co-op in the Sierra de Gredos and all old-vine Grenache, the 2017 Granito De Cadalso comes from granite soils, was destemmed, and brought up all in concrete tanks. This Pinot Noir-like beauty offers notes of wild strawberries, rose hips, violets, and crushed rocks. Medium-bodied, with remarkable purity and vibrancy, it still has ample power and richness. This is a fabulous expression of Grenache that’s almost too good to be true. Inner quote mark (4/2019)

Outer quote mark The 2017 Granitos de Cadalso is a custom cuvée for the US market. It's very upfront, juicy and ripe Garnacha that shows the warm character of the year. It shows lots of Garnacha character (more than Gredos) and is juicy and pleasant to drink. (LG) Inner quote mark (12/2018)

K&L Notes

The village of Cadalso de los Vidrios is situated at the foot of the Sierra de Gredos. For centuries workshops here made glass windows for the palaces of Spain from the granitic sands of the region. Ancient, head-pruned vines of Garnacha planted in these same soils make for equally transparent wine. Garnet in color with vibrant flavors of red fruits, laurel, and orange peel, "Granito del Caldalso" is made under the guidance of famed winemakers Dani Landi and Fernando Garcia.

Bright crunchy red fruits. Quiet aromatic with floral notes on the nose, This wine is super fresh and balance. Slightly herbaceous and amazingly easy to drink. Due to its drink-ability will be so versatile with all kind of dishes but perhaps it will show its true characters when paired with smokey cured meats and sharp cheeses.

There Sierra de Gredos mountain were not on most drinkers wine map a decade ago. The range of mountains is located about an hour west of Madrid. The relatively high elevation and granitic soils and a perfect starting point for delicious Garnacha. Throw in the light touch of winemakers Daniel Landi and Fernando Garcia and the equation is complete. This is a high toned Garnacha with lifted pure aromatics, and hint of mountain herbs. The wine texture and weight of the wine are surprising given the wines delicate hue. A versatile red that also surprises.
