2017 Oakridge "Original Vineyard" Cabernet Sauvignon Yarra Valley Victoria

SKU #1422456 97 points Bob Campbell

Medium to deep red/purple colour with a bright, fresh, clean cabernet aroma of sweet cassis and background cedar. The wine is medium to full-bodied, with restrained but glorious flavour, and is slightly closed. It has a tight, firm palate, but reveals more and more blackberry, blackcurrant cabernet character as it airs in the glass. It's elegant and texturally refined. A beautiful cabernet with a big future. It demands patience. (Fruit is off the original Oakridge vineyard at Seville, to mark the Oakridge 40th anniversary.) (Huon Hooke, The Real Review) (3/2019)

95 points James Halliday

The Original Vineyard (with a different owner) was planted on the red soils at Seville in a cooler and wetter climate than the Yarra Valley floor. The mature vines are no longer threatened by rain every vintage, and the wine is fragrant and ultra-juicy, redcurrant and cassis reflecting the 3-week maceration without a hint of extraction. (8/2019)

92 points James Suckling

A firm and silky cabernet with blackcurrants, black olives and dried herbs that follow through to a medium body. Polished and long finish. Drink now or hold. (6/2019)

A juicy, fragrant expression of what Down Under cab can be. Pop open a bottle up and let it sit for half an hour. Elegant tannins open up to reveal a warm palate of dark berry, wet forest, and herbs, developing into plum and black currant with a silky soft finish. Marking Oakridge's 40th anniversary, and these grapes were sourced from the original Oakridge Vineyard. This will age nicely in the cellar but is also showing beautifully now, and will be a perfect addition to the holiday table. I can see this becoming a go-to Cab as the temperature descends.

If you enjoy more refined, balanced styles of Cabernet you should check out this stunner from Oakridge. Whilst the alcohol is a very moderate 13.3% the flavors are anything but moderate! Bright, fresh blue and black berries, lavender, bay laurel, tobacco leaf. Medium bodied with lovely fine tannins interwoven with the sleek fruit. Crushed rock mineral undertones and cigar box linger. Try with a rack of lamb.

Oakridge is putting out some stellar wines. The "Original Vineyard" shows the beautiful elegance of Yarra Cabernet, with all the full and dark Cabernet character. Sweet, dark fruit, vanilla spice and dark caramel are pronounced on the nose. This silky medium bodied Cabernet has beautiful texture, juicy acidity and freshness that defies arcane stereotypes of Australia. The dark fruit, elegant tannin and and juicy acid ring true to Yarra valley's cool climate. If you enjoy elegant and complex Cabernet's that are showing well now, this is a phenomenal find.

Yarra Valley Cabernet is a rare find on US shelves. In an ultra-cool pocket of Australia more known for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, only a handful of producers make Cabernet well, but when they do, it is absolutely stunning. Take a second and try to think of new-world, cool-climate Cabernet. There’s not many of them. Ridge and Mount Eden are the two that come to mind and equally they were the first thing I thought of when I first opened the Oakridge Cab. This is aromatic Cabernet at its best. Elements of mint, dry herbs, mocha and cherry liqueur abound on this. The palate hits you like a missile. Streamlined. Rich fruit. Smooth, softened tannin. An essence of pure Cabernet. Clean and bright, powerful and yet elegant, this is a stunning wine at its price that you absolutely can’t miss.

Classic New World Cabernet with gobs of fruit and drink now structure. The nose pours out of the glass with blackberry and fresh cut tobacco . Fans of Napa should be excited by how rich and powerful this is; punching way above its weight. The framing is equally impressive as the rest of the drink. I'm a huge fan and love how this showcases the potential of Cabernet is Australia.
