Luis Seabra is one of the most exciting producers in Valley. His efforts are to capture and express all of the facets that the wines that this region can posses. This wine explicitly express one of the dominant soil type of the valley, schist(Xisto). He balances the floral, bright fruit, wild savory and lingering minerality that fruit grown on that soil is capable of producing. He mixes old school foot trodding in granite lagares with modern stainless tanks and old wood barrels. He and his wines are a bridge from the traditional to the modern without any of the negative connotations that come from either.

Whether as a customer or staff, I customarily scope out the Portuguese wines on our shelves, as they often promise flavor profiles distinct from the 'path well beaten' Cabernet/Merlot/Pinot Noir universe, coupled with salutary drinking pleasure. Kirk Walker, our insightful Iberian buyer, was working nearby and didn't hesitate to point to this cool Douro field blend, made from a medley of vines planted on yellow schist soils at high elevation. Natural yeast fermented in a traditional stone lagar with foot pigeage (I said traditional!) and racked to neutral wood for about a year, this wine oozed aromas of wild cherry, lavender scrub and mulberry, with notes of pomegranate, cherry and violets on the lavish palate, framed by luscious acidity. And Xisto? My guess it is pronounced 'Zheesto', so I will close by playfully calling this wine IrreXistoble! Ok, I know.....

A blend of Touriga Franca, Tinta Amarela, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Malvasia Preta. An amazing wine with a great balance between fruits, acidity and spice. We tried this NATURAL wine with Mediterranean grilled lamb and chicken and it was just a sweet addition to the dish.

Portugal is Europe's fourth-largest wine-producing region, and has been exporting its wine since the 14th century. The Douro Valley of Portugal is the original and current home for the world's finest Port. The valley spans from east of the city of Oporto all the way to the border of Spain and is the country's best known wine region. Lesser-appreciated DOCs like Bairrada and Dão area also emerging for their fine, rustic reds.
