2016 Lanessan, Haut-Médoc

SKU #1419793 93 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Currant, lead pencil and fresh rose-petal aromas follow through to a full body, round and nicely chewy tannins and a long finish. Balanced and polished. Inner quote mark (2/2019)

Outer quote mark This is an ambitious take on 2016, pushing the vintage but successfully so, going for a cerebral 2010 feel rather than the generosity of 2009. Classic liquorice and slate, tight cassis fruits and an extremely well paced delivery of fresh tight tannins lead into a gorgeous, lifted juicy fruit finish. From a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. I like this a lot. (JA) Inner quote mark (4/2017)

Outer quote mark The finest wine of the decade at this address is the 2016 Lanessan, a terrific effort that unwinds in the glass with aromas of dark berries, cassis, cigar wrapper, sweet soil tones and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, layered and impressively concentrated, with a deep core of fruit, velvety tannins and a penetrating finish, it represents a terrific value—and gives a sense of what this estate is capable of. K&L Notes

90-92 points, Neal Martin - Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Lanessan has a perfumed, quite floral bouquet with graphite tinged black fruit—fine delineation with impressive focus, even if it is not the most complex Haut-Medoc that I encountered in this vintage out of barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannin, well-judged acidity, plenty of black fruit with a harmonous, engaging and slightly tarry finish. This is a great Lanessan that should give 20 years of pleasure. This comes highly recommended and I expect it will land at the top of my banded score once in bottle." (04/2017)

Always interesting1 Slightly earthy scents with pencil lead and black fruits. On the palate, dark berries, baking spices, anise. Smooth and rich and certainly a bargain.

From the excellent 2016 vintage comes this wine from Lanessan. This is savory and complex. It's immediately full of notes of graphite and mushroom, but there's dark fruit and violet here too, as well as some anise and black pepper. The tannins are light and silky, making for a well-integrated wine that is ready to drink. A perfect accompaniment to pate or creamy cheese. I, myself, had it with some camembert and it was just perfect!

More deeply hued than the 2015 tasted before it, the 2016 Lanessan showcases the character of this remarkable vintage through it's fine tannins, compact structure, and depth of flavor. Although usually about half Cabernet, it seems to take more of a center stage in the 2016. Violets, black cherry, and a touch of vanilla (only 1/3 new oak) on the aromas, the palate has compact dark red fruit, a thread of mouthwatering acidity, and an impressive texture that carries to a long, flavorful finish. This is an impressive showing and a wonderful contrast to the cool and charming 2015, but it never feels heavy or extracted by any means. I think it is the seriousness of the vintage shines through, as it shows much younger and a lot deeper in flavor. For the Bouard generation at Lanessan, this is going to be a point of comparison for a long time to come.

This is dark, firm and sleek with plenty of ripe fruit and Pauillac-like graphite minerality. This property has shed any hint of last decades rusticity and the freshness of the vintage shows well. Feel free to decant this tonight.
