Animas Joven Mezcal (750ml)

SKU #1419556

This espadin (A. Angustifolia) mezcal is the perfect pick for anyone starting to explore the world of quality mezcal or as a relatively inexpensive option for mezcal-based cocktails. It's very approachable and laden with sweet agave fruit. The smoke component is decidedly there, but not very intense, as one would expect with a well-made mezcal. A rich texture makes this a delightful sipper or stout component in a mezcal variant of the Last Word. Gold medal winner in Tequila Aficionado's 2021 Brands of Promise.

Animas Joven is a very nice mezcal at a very nice price. As good quality mezcal for under $50 is becoming very difficult to come by, this bottle delivers. The nose hits first with agave syrup, then brings a fruit forward sweetness that is supported by light smoke. Very pleasant. The palate brings more agave nectar, some rich spices and just a hint of smoke on the finish. I find the spicy notes on this pour make it the perfect substitute in an Old Fashioned. No cherry, lime or orange twist.

This Mezcal is interesting and delicious. The nose has integrated smoke, savory and citrus aromas that work together very well. In the mouth this wonderful Mezcal continues to please. The savory and citrus flavors are there with a nice fresh fruit salad finish.

In terms of reasonably priced Mezcal, this bottle is a gem. For its value it has a near endless amount to offer to anyone who’s looking to enjoy it. On the nose you’re immediately met with an array of rich, and juicy fruit notes: Citrus and Pineapple –followed by green bell pepper, and the soft bite of serrano peppers. The palate offers all the same if not more, wrapping it up in a wonderful savory subtle smoke that leaves the drinker wanting for another sip. Perfectly balanced, and perfectly accessible.

I've said it many times myself: It's annoyingly difficult to get good, smoky mezcal at a moderate price point. Animas fills that agave-shaped hole in my life. The smoke comes on with moderate strength, giving wafts of charred wood and burnt earth, but it doesn't overpower the agave. Lightly tropical notes unfold the more I sniff with orange, lime, and mango. The palate has a great savory note with a mouth-watering saltiness and earthy minerality.

While there are less expensive mezcals available, very few in the sub $50 category deliver this much flavor and intensity. With the sky rocketing price of agave, it's getting harder and harder to find quality at a reasonable price point. This espadin mezcal is stuffed with intense fruit components and balanced by a perfect slightly saline minerality and gentle smoke. And that's just the nose. The palate reiterates all of those notes but adds a crystal clear black pepper spice to the mix. The finish is medium length and very clean. The perfect place to start a mezcal journey, or to keep your hands off the super high end wild agave while you play around with cocktails.
