2017 La Monacesca Verdicchio di Matelica

SKU #1419167

The Matelica region of the Marche is one of the most unique growing zones in all of Italy; it is a north-south valley in the middle of the Apennine mountain range that once was a salt lake. The orientation of the valley closes it off from the warm coastal waters and gives it a more continental climate of cold winters and hot summers with cool nights, the perfect balance to make vibrant wines.

I love Verdicchio (Lugana it turns out is made from the same grape and yes, I love those as well), and I especially love the Matelica zone for Verdicchio. This lifted Appenine valley transforms the grape into something extraordinary. The long hang time, with late October harvesting, really allows this grape to reach its full phenolic potential. Often we think of ripeness as a sugar level, especially here in California. That’s just the alcohol potential; the flavor component comes from the phenolic ripeness and as a wine ages it’s that portion that begins to show the depth it can attain. Not too long ago I brought in a few bottles of my 2012 to taste side by side with this 2017 to show everyone what this wine could do. To see the expressions on their faces was priceless. They wouldn’t have believed me without tasting it. Trust me on this one and stock up!

This is the kind of wine I would wholeheartedly recommend. A beautiful pale lemony color greets you, followed by a peppery nose full of citron, grapefruit and Granny Smith apples and a whiff of dried herbs. Very intriguing palate indeed; a slight prickling on the tongue due to its incredible crispness and a touch of almond skin. It is like biting on a juicy green apple. This wine begs for seafood, risotto, lasagna bianca, fettuccine alfredo or pasta primavera.

Owner Aldo Cifola produces some of the very finest Verdicchio that possesses impressive concentration and depth. This serious wine has developed quite a following of late and the 2017 is really delicious. Subtle flavors of citrus, yellow fruit, anise and mineral make this especially good with seafood, mild cheese and lighter fare. It will continue to evolve over the next few years.
