Glen Moray 23 Year Old "Old Malt Cask" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1418354

Glen Moray is a distillery that has historically been a victim of its own success. Long owened by Glenmorangie's ownership group, Macdonald & Muir, Glen Moray served as a malt for the budget conscious consumer. Despite making excellent whisky and being widly consumed, it never really recovered from this association. The good news is that today $100 bucks for anything with a big age statement is firmly in the "budget" category, and this malt over delivers in a big way. It's supremely soft and supple. Fruity, round, heavy with vanilla, honey and pretty florals. Yet again our our direct relationships in Scotland deliver terrific aged stocks at modest price tags. This is likely the sleeper of this years selections.

This one hit the nose with big oak spice up front with underlying iodine followed closely by almond Rocca and Bartlett pear notes, as the heat died down a bit green banana and creamed brown sugar. The palate on this was exceptionally smooth at the beginning, leading up to a slow burn that enticed me into another sip. The oak spice still made its presence known with marzipan, golden brown sugar, and candied orange all seamlessly flowing together. The finish was medium length and culminated in that pleasant, warm tingling sensation that made me want to keep going back for more, truly a great pour for the price.

This is a silly deal. 23 year old single malt for 100 bucks from a distillery renowned for its approachable and delicious style? Just the specs have "no brainer" written all over it. One taste, and it's hard to not be over the moon on this one. Ripe fruits, luscious florals, honey and sweet grain. There is a lovely oily texture here as well. It's really apparent with the addition of water - the oils become very visible as the proof drops. Both the nose and the palate offer sweet milk chocolates with the addition of water and the oily nature moves towards creamy. Perfectly balanced and priced this cask is one of the best values we've seen since whisky prices really began to climb.

This is one of those whiskys that is easy to enjoy and should please any single malt lover. The nose is a beautiful mixture of wax and honey. The mouth of this selection is round and juicy with wax and honey flavors. All of the flavor aspects work together. My first thought when tasting this Glen Moray was that it is fantastic and a real treat.

Glen Moray (pronounced Murray) is a great little distillery outside of Elgin that's got a small following who really love it's floral style. On paper this malt is the best deal of 2019, but in the glass is out performs the price point while staying true to the distillery style. As per usual this needs a splash to get going as it's very closed, nearly mute, straight out of the bottle. Once you've given it a push the nose is a gorgeous bouquet of white and yellow flowers, ripe apricots skins, zippy minerality and cracked walnut shells. On the palate is sugar cookies, pine, peppermint and persimmon (the good kind). Linear and very lively, this is the best a naked Moray has tasted in a long while in my book.
