2016 MontRubí "Gaintus Radical" Sumoll Penedès

SKU #1418033 90 points Wine & Spirits

Planted on clay and lime soils in the mountains of Catalonia, this sumoll has a tannic tension that immediately suggests grilled meat. Even so, there’s lovely depth of cherry flavor in this fresh, summery red for vacations under the sun. (10/2018)

K&L Notes

100% Sumoll an extremely rare black grape native to Penedès. Grown in Calcareous Clay soils. Vines are planted at over 500 meters (1650 feet). Hand-selected berries undergo a cold soak maceration and fermentation on the skins in 1500L fudres using indigenous yeast. The wine is extracted by a slow vertical pressing followed by 4 months of aging in 300L old French oak barrels on the fine lees. Powerful nose of red currants and black morello cherries with touches of crimson rose. Luscious and fresh on the palate, with round tannins, balanced acidity and strong varietal character.
