2015 Matias "Sierra Mar Vineyard" Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir (Elsewhere $40)

SKU #1417197 93 points Wine Enthusiast

Aromas of red-cherry reduction sauce meet with mud, clay, purple flowers, peppercorns and herbs on the dynamic nose of this single-vineyard bottling. The palate is quite dry and herbal with flavors of fennel frond, anise, and thyme, but there's a solid mulberry and exotic red-fruit core. (MK) (12/2018)

This Pinot benefits from the vineyard location, one of the highest sites in the Santa Lucia Highlands, where hills channel wind and fog to keep the area much cooler than the surroundings. On the nose there is a dramatic spice profile and loads of dried red fruits. This wine is bright, fresh, and crunchy. The palate piles on cherry, raspberry, subtle citrus, black pepper, a touch of leather, and tapers to an herbal and floral-forward finish. A concentrated and lovely offering from the folks at Brack Mountain Wines.

To be honest, I had never heard of the Matias wines before they landed at K&L, but after tasting both the Sierra Mar and Soberanes Vineyards, I can tell you these will be at the front of my mind for a while to come. Each one I've tasted I've been extremely impressed by and the Sierra Mar most definitely does not disappoint. Bright and crunchy with fresh red fruit flavors, this is a top notch SLH Pinot Noir. The non-vineyard classified Chardonnay went fast, and I expect the Pinot Noirs will do the same.

A distinctly cool climate expression of Pinot Noir with lovely bright fruit and savory, leafy, earthy components running throughout. Very poised with juicy red berry fruits, fennel, bramble leaf, fresh herbs. Elegant and focused on the palate; immaculate balance. Just one wine is a line up from Matias that shows fantastic quality and craftsmanship in the cellar. I can hardly believe we have more of these wines to offer at these crazy prices. Get them while you can.
