2017 Domaine Joseph Drouhin Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru "Morgeot Marquis de Laguiche" (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1416826 94 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Tighter and better balanced than the Drouhins' Les Embazées premier cru in 2017, this is entirely sourced from the prestigious Laguiche holdings. It has a beautifully judged combination of leesy texture, aromatic spices and 30% new wood, finishing with bright, refreshing acidity. Drinking window 2020-2027. (TA) Inner quote mark (11/2018)

Outer quote mark Obviously I have a soft spot for this beautiful bottling of Morgeot, as I wrote a feature on the Marquis de Laguiche bottling back in the spring. The 2017 version is flat out stunning and was one of the very best premier cru whites I tasted from the Côte de Beaune in November. The wine was still in cask in November and absolutely singing, as it delivers a beautiful aromatic constellation of pear, apple, orange zest, crème patissière, complex chalky soil elements, vanillin oak and a lovely floral topnote redolent of lemon blossoms. On the palate the wine is pure, fullbodied, focused and racy, with a great core of fruit, stellar soil signature, bright, zesty acids and laser-like focus on the very long, very pure and refined finish. Great juice. 2018-2045+. Inner quote mark (12/2018)

Outer quote mark A very attractive, complex nose with a bright array of lemons and white peaches, as well as flinty and stony nuances. The palate delivers weight and freshness. Really attractive and lithe with a vibrant array of limes and young nectarines at the finish. Drink or hold. Inner quote mark

Outer quote mark The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Marquis de Laguiche is showing brilliantly from bottle, wafting from the glass with a lovely bouquet of orange oil, nutmeg, Anjou pear, white peach, honeycomb and wheat toast. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, satiny and succulent, with an elegantly textural attack, fine concentration at the core and racy underpinning acids. Harmonious and complete, this is routinely one of Drouhin's finest white wines, and that is true in 2017 also. (WK) Inner quote mark (2/2020)

Outer quote mark The vibrant character shines through, along with flavors of butterscotch, peach, vanilla and almond croissant. Lean and focused, with toasty oak and a tactile finish that picks up a mineral element. Drink now through 2025. Inner quote mark (2/2021)

91-93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

Outer quote mark A pungent nose is composed of petrol, wood and a touch of unabsorbed sulfur that shouldn't last. Otherwise the exceptionally rich, enveloping and powerful medium weight plus flavors abound with sappy dry extract that coats the palate and buffers the moderately firm acid spine shaping the delicious, dry and focused finale. This isn't an elegant wine but the complexity is impressive and in any event, refinement isn't why one buys Morgeot. *Burghound Sweet Spot Outstanding!* Inner quote mark (6/2019)

91-93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet Morgeot 1er Cru (Marquis de Laguiche) has a wonderful, vivacious bouquet of citrus fruit infused with yellow flowers and grilled walnut, actually quite Meursault-like in style. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, touches of walnut and lemon peel, well-integrated oak and real precision and mineralité toward the finish. Excellent. 90-93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Bright yellow-green. High-pitched aromas of yellow peach, minerals, anise and spices are complemented by deeper soil tones. Fully ripe and concentrated but classically dry, conveying a creamy glyceral quality to its yellow fruit flavors. These millerandé vines give less juice, noted Véronique Drouhin, and the result in 2017 appears to have been higher alcohol and higher acidity. The lively finish features rising length. Inner quote mark (9/2018)

K&L Notes

93pts Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Pale lemon yellow, a rather heady bouquet, ripe fruit and good oak, this has admirable tension on the palate as well as great weight. Morgeot always offers body while the skilled operators seem to be able to infuse energy through the middle. Tasted: November 2018."
