2018 Eric Cottat Sancerre Rouge

We were first introduced to the wines of Eric Cottat a few years back. He was brought to our attention by one of our long-time friends and winemakers in Sancerre, and we brought in a small amount as that was all we were allowed to take at the time. Eric is a one-man show and only produces a small amount of wines each vintage for family, friends, and close customers, and then sells off the rest of his fruit to other eager producers in the region. Last year I had the opportunity to pay Mr. Cottat a visit and quickly became enamored by how he goes about doing things. The Sancerre rouge is Pinot Noir. Typically, it's a super fresh style with lots of red spice and textural mineral. Lighter in color and body but with really nice focus and drive. Open this and decant for about an hour so the purity of fruit can open up and really shine.

Everyone at K&L knows if I go for Pinot Noir it will be from Sancerre! It is like no other region. This wine has beautiful floral aromas, fresh, bright cranberries and pomegranate on the palate and a smooth finish. It has crunchy tannins and wonderful acidity that makes this wine perfectly diverse for any kind of food. Once you experience this Pinot Noir, you will get on board with me about this region.

Is Sancerre the new Burgundy? Maybe it is just the greatness of Cottat. Seriously, I can't remember having such a great Pinot from the Loire before. The nose is stellar with cranberry, flowers, orange peel and herbs. Medium bodied with grippy tannins and perfect subtle acidity. If you like a great pinot, and especially not paying a lot for it, add this to your cart.

Here's a Pinot that regardless of where it is from, it is delicious - I mean, it will please all lovers of good Pinot Noir. It happens to be from France, from the beautiful Loire Valley to be more exact, and it is a classic! Gorgeous aromatics of fresh cherries, violets, cola and even a touch of vanilla. On the very soft palate, all of the above is framed by the juicy acidity and medium tannins. This wine would be absolutely perfect with vegetarian dishes, Indian cuisine, Mexican, Pizza, Peking duck, and I could go on. Very versatile. Bravo Eric Cottat!
