2017 Moulin de la Gardette "Tradition" Gigondas DUPE

SKU #1415216 93-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark I was hard-pressed to find any qualitative difference between the 2017 Gigondas Tradition and the old-vine cuvée, Ventabren. The Tradition boasts more exotic lavender-like florals and perhaps a bit less concentration but remains full-bodied, supple, ripe and balanced, with a silky, tea-like finish. Both are terrific wines. 93 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Grown on clay-limestone and marl, the fruit is hand-picked with no destemming, and is aged in old foudres. The wine is pretty, bright and open, with raspberry, strawberry and violet fruits. It's barely medium-bodied, but has a lovely expression of fresh and easy red berry fruits, accompanied by a juicy berry acidity and gentle blackberry-skin tannins on the finish. An easy-going and highly drinkable Gigondas. Just lovely. (MW) Inner quote mark (10/2018)

90-93 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark Notes of tobacco leaf, menthol, peppery spice, and cedar all emerge from the 2017 Gigondas Tradition. This blend of 80% Grenache and 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre is medium to full-bodied, nicely balanced, and has sweet tannins, all making for a seriously impressive barrel sample. 91 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Brilliant violet color. Suave, highly perfumed scents of red berry liqueur, exotic and smoky minerals, along with a lively floral overtone. Offers appealingly sweet black raspberry and lavender pastille flavors that are sharpened by white pepper and mineral flourishes. The berry and floral notes repeat strongly on a very long, supple finish that's framed by smoothly interwoven tannins. (JR) Inner quote mark (2/2020)

K&L Notes

Jean-Baptiste Meunier is the fifth generation winemaker behind the great property of Moulin de la Gardette in the Rhone region of Gigondas. We have been working with him since the mid-90s and the wines have always been some of our favorites from the area. The region itself has stepped out of the shadow of neighboring Chateauneuf du Pape, creating wines of intensity and flavor that are distinctly their own. Gigondas has more south facing slopes and higher elevations as well as varied soils that help distinguish the region. The "Tradition" is a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah from vines averaging an age of 40 years. It is aged for about 18 months in mostly used foudre and barrique before bottling.
