2012 Gaudin, Pauillac

SKU #1415089 91 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Produced on a small family-run estate that is surrounded by Bordeaux first growths, this wine is structured and firm. It has dark tannins and black currant fruit, together giving a ripe, smoky wine. The 40-year-old vines add to the concentration of this wine. *Editors' Choice* (RV) Inner quote mark (9/2016)

K&L Notes

Located on the gravelly ridges of the village of Saint-Lambert in Pauillac, Château Gaudin is a vineyard of 4 hectares acquired in 1901. Three generations later, the estate is still family owned and run. The estate is now 11 hectares total with Cabernet Sauvignon dominating the plantings along with a smattering of Merlot and Carménère.

It’s hard to argue with Pauillac. This region is home to the largest number of the world's greatest Cabernet blends in the world. With neighboring producers fetching 300+, it’s shocking that this tiny property is still producing excellent wines at an extraordinarily good price. Absolutely perfumed. Showing development with tertiary notes of dried herbs, warm baking spices, and deep dark fruits. This is showing exceptionally right now. Tannins that are softened with age, this is a startling surprise bottle that is too good to miss.

Somehow, we have been able to offer several vintages of this charming Pauillac for under $30 now. The château is family owned and has only 11 hectares planted, and offers true Pauillac quality for a great price. It is showing rich red fruits, graphite, and smoke, but with totally mellow tannins and a nice cherry kirsch finish. This is definitely one of the better deals on aged Left Bank red right now.

READY TO DRINK! This Pauillac is a wine that is sure to impress, and still a steal at $29.99. Delicately smokey, like you've just walked past a cigar shop and are half way down the block before you realize it. Structured, rich in dark fruit, and it goes down easy. This is now my go-to Medoc in this price range.
