2016 Purlieu "Le Pich" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1414883 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Le Pich features very pretty notes of crushed blueberries, blackberries and chocolate-covered cherries with hints of violets and cedar chest plus a waft of bay leaves. Medium to full-bodied, packed with vibrant black fruits and plushly textured, this buxom beauty is ready for biz, finishing satisfyingly long and spicy. (LPB) (10/2018)

K&L Notes

Purlieu Winemaker, Julien Fayard began his winemaking career in Provence. Then a move to Bordeaux proved to be where he defined his winemaking style - at none other than the world famous first growth, Château Lafite-Rothschild. He also worked at Smith Haut Lafitte in Pessac-Léognan. After moving to California to be with his Sonoma native wife, he settled in Napa. Julien worked at Quintessa before joining Atelier Melka, where he spent five years as the Director of Winemaking. During that time he worked with a variety of clients including Lail Vineyards, Gemstone and Dalla Valle.

This is freshhhhhhhhhh. This Cab from Purlieu is juicy, bright, and full of red fruit with just a little leather. On the palate, the ripe fruits turn darker, with notes of scorched earth, and a touch of barrel spice. With those toastier and heavier flavors, the wine never looses its bright characteristics and ripeness. The freshness dominates. This is a great red for summer.

The pedigree and wine making prowess behind this wine is very obvious from the first sniff to the last sip. Purlieu winemaker, Julien Fayard was born in Provence but earned his stripes in the hallowed cellars of Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Smith Haut Lafitte. After moving to the USA with his California native wife, Élan, he landed a job at Quintessa and then began working for cult super star winemaker Philippe Melka. Eventually becoming Director of Winemaking for Atelier Melka, Julien got to work with the very best vineyards in the valley and groomed his style to perfection. How crazy is it then that you can enjoy the fruit of his labors in a wine priced under $50? A guy who trained at Château Lafite and Dalle Valle (to name just a few)...getting access to THE best fruit in Napa Valley...with 94+ points from Wine Advocate...for under $50! If you like the idea of drinking cult level Napa Cab on a regular basis (without dissolving the kid's college fund) Purlieu's "Le Pich" Cab should be on your radar. It checks all the boxes and is incredibly delicious and satisfying. Showcasing an amazing purity of fruit, perfectly measured ripeness and polished structure. A very precise and exacting wine making style. It's a real gem.
