2018 Domaine Petroni Corse Blanc (Corsica)

SKU #1413947 92 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark More tart citrus, passion fruits, and pineapple notes emerge from the medium-bodied 2018 Domaine Petroni (100% Vermentino), which offers racy acidity, terrific balance, and a great finish. It’s another smoking good white from this estate that shines for its purity, balance, and length. I love it. Inner quote mark (7/2019)

90 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Crisply textured and with minerality, this fruity wine is still young and bursting with life. Acidity and freshness are balanced by a nervy texture that will soften and open. Drink this wine from late 2020. (RV) Inner quote mark (2/2020)

Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Yellow apple, fennel and white peach flavors form the mix here. Gently buttered, with a rounded feel, but maintains a fresh edge throughout. (JM) Inner quote mark

K&L Notes

A warm weather superstar, this is 100% Vermentinu. Domaine Petroni lies on the eastern shore of Corsica near Lake Diane, one of the great sources for oysters and mussels on the island. Founded in 1885 and run by the Ramazotti brothers, the vineyards are planted on sandy and clay soils overlooking the Mediterranean. Their rosé was one of our great success stories this year, but the white and red have emerged as house favorites as well.

Have yet to visit Corsica, but fortunately Corsica has paid multiple visits to our shores, at least in the guise of its delightful, highly evocative wines. Domaine Petroni might give a classical Latin scholar pause, but it has nothing in common with Gaius Petronius, the famous Roman author of the Satyricon, except perhaps for the lusty nature of its luscious fruit. Petroni’s own classic, straw-hued Vermentinu, planted in sandy and clay soils within proximity of the sea, has inviting aromas and a vivacious palate of saline, acacia blossom, white peach and citrus fruits, with mouthwatering minerality. Pair with grilled sea bass, shellfish or pesto pizza for a perfectly lovely dinner. You will be seduced!

I have long been a fan of the Petroni rosé and the red, and I can now add this fabulous Vermentinu to the list. Imagine yourself sitting seaside in Corsica as you breathe in the refreshing citrus and subtle floral aromatics and sip back a combo of lime, grapefruit and tropical fruit. This is crisp and bright, showing a hint of salinity and plenty of zingy acidity. Great with baked fish, grilled pork loan, roasted vegetables and an array of Mediterrean dishes.

I look forward to the new release of this wine. I have always been a fan of Vermentino from Italy but experiencing the Whites from Corsica has swayed me to the other island for Vermentino. It is crisp and enticingly aromatic. It has modest richness, great acidity, and nice extract, especially for this price point. This wine just lingers. What a great deal it is.

I absolutely adore this wine, year after year. Offbeat but still beautifully crisp and delicious, Corsican wines always have the ability to surprise and impress. Full of bright nectarine, honeycomb, and lemon zest, this particular vintage shows greater weight and texture than years past--and is all the better for it. This is a hall-of-fame under $15 white for me.

Things have progressed beautifully with the Petroni wines over the last few years. The rose has been a perennial favorite since we started bringing it in to our stores. The rouge is one of the top value reds in our set and continues to fly out the door. The white has always remained a little in the background though as whites from Corsica, don't always get the attention they deserve. Well, no more, I say! Out front and center, the white, made from Vermentinu (aka Rolle and aka Italy's Vermentino) is the noble white grape on the island. This is gorgeous with crystalline focus, flavors of mango, pineapple and Meyer lemons on the mid-palate and finishing with a hint of jasmine. This is no substitute for a rich Chardonnay nor explosvie Sauvignon Blanc. This is for fans of subtler more refined whites. If you love Muscadet, Picpoul, Pinot Grigio and of course Italian Vermentino, you will find a lot to like here.
