Troll Bridge is a small boutique label and a collaboration between owner Allan Ezial and winemaker Jon Engelskirger. Allan, a graphic designer by trade, fell in love with wine while designing labels and marketing materials for some of the biggest names in Napa Valley. He recruited his friend and then winemaker at Turnbull, Jon Engelskirger, to make the wines. Together they went about sourcing some of the very best fruit in the valley. The 2012 "Password" Red Blend is composed of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Malbec. Sourced from vineyards in Coombsville, Oakville, Rutherford (the names of which must remain anonymous, but are some of the most prestigious in the region). The wine aged for 17 months in 50% new Fouquet Margaux and D'Aquitaine French oak barriques. Just 250 cases were made.

Wow - this is gonna be a huge seller here at K&L...at least as long as it stays in stock! Check out the backstory on this wine: Marketing / graphic designer, Allan Ezial, who has spent decades creating labels, brochures, websites, etc for Napa's top producers, decided to team up with winemaking legend Jon Engelskirger (Turnbull) to make some tiny production, high-end Napa Cabs. The fruit was locked down by Jon and is from VERY famous sources (that, unfortunately, must remain nameless) in the sub-regions Coombsville, Oakville, and Rutherford. The craftsmanship in the cellar is flawless and it was aged in the best cooperage money can buy. This is a powerful, rich, full-bodied Cab that is perfectly ready to drink after resting 18 months in barrel and 5 years in bottle. The fruit is still very primary and bold, yet the tannins have resolved to become soft and silky. It's got everything - rich decadent cassis and blackcurrant, bramble, sweet tobacco notes, scorched earth and is framed by very sexy (expensive) French oak that is now perfectly integrated with the other elements. This is absolutely in it's prime and drinking beautifully but has another 3-5 years in the tank no problem. Basically, you're getting a $75, perfectly aged, Napa Cab blend, made by one of the best winemakers in the valley, for less than half of the winery price.

Trollbridge lives up to the second half of its name: it's got a style that bridges Cali red blends and more Bordeaux characteristics. It boasts of big bold fruit and acidity initially. Then scents of old leather, tobacco, blackberry, and cassis roll in. The palate comes on with tart cherry, green herbaceousness, and dusty earth. The tannins here are soft and friendly. This vintage is ready to drink now, but could also hang out age for a good while longer. Trolls can be tasty too.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.


- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.

Napa's great diversity, both in terms of climate and terroir, has led to the creation of a number of smaller AVAs like Stags Leap District, Rutherford, Howell Mountain, Oakville and Mount Veeder, among others. Cabernet and chardonnay still reign supreme, but just about everything under the sun is grown in Napa Valley, in quality levels ranging from $2 jug wine to $500 a bottle California cab.
