2016 Mark Ryan Winery "Lonely Heart" Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (Previously $100)

SKU #1411860 96 points Jeb Dunnuck

One of the flagship releases is the 2016 Lonely Heart, which is all Cabernet Sauvignon from Red Mountain (Obelisco and Klipsun vineyards) that was brought up in 88% new French oak. Purple to the rim, this beauty gives up loads of crème de cassis, graphite, white flowers, and camphor. One of those “iron fist in a velvet glove” wines, it displays beautiful fruit, remarkable purity, and a great finish. As with all of Mike's wines, it has the purity and texture to drink well in its youth, yet it will also cruise for two decades in cool cellars. 96+ (4/2019)

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The generously structured 2016 Lonely Heart Cabernet Sauvignon has a nose that is full of pure, spiced black fruit, with seductive oak tones and purple flower aromas. The full-bodied wine has a concentrated and dense fruit expression with crème de cassis and blackberry jus, paired with beautiful mocha tones and gravel on the palate. The finish is long, offering parting flavors that are spicy yet elegant and will last for years to come. Only 380 cases made. (AM) (12/2019)

Redcurrants and fresh pipe-tobacco notes lead to a palate that has attractively fleshy texture and plenty of mulberries and red plums. A soulful and attractive cab. Drink or hold. (7/2019)

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Full ruby-red. Slightly high-toned aromas of blackberry, cassis, licorice, violet and bitter chocolate. Fine-grained, densely packed and quite suave, with brambly dark berry flavors lifted by an herbal element. Firm but not coarse or dry, finishing with nicely buffered tannins. This very primary Cabernet builds subtly on the long back end, leaving behind a violet perfume. Two thousand sixteen was clearly a very successful vintage for McNeilly and his winemaker Mike Macmorran. (14.8% alcohol; a barrel selection of what McNeilly described as "the best stuff in the winery"; from Obelisco and Klipsun; 88% new oak) 92+ (12/2019)

This wine is 100% varietal, with all of the fruit coming from Obelisco and Klipsun vineyards. The aromas aren’t ready to reveal themselves at present. Dark cherry, black raspberry, spice, dark coffee and licorice notes lead to dark, dense fruit flavors, with a lively sense of acidity framing it all. It’s a fascinating wine, more about subtlety than strength. It should have a long life in front of it. Best after 2025. *Cellar Selection* (SS) (6/2018)

K&L Notes

Winemaker's Notes: "For the 2016 Lonely Heart, we called on Kilpsun Vineyard, one of Washington’s best sites for cabernet sauvignon. Planted in 1989, the cabernet sauvignon from Klipsun Vineyard provides texture, power, and an unmistakable character. The support of Obelisco Vineyard cabernet sauvignon adds intense richness, depth and layers of dark fruits. When working with fruit of such extraordinary quality, we strive to elevate and support its inherent greatness without dominating the profile with heavy-handed winemaking techniques. Our goal is to allow the amazing fruit quality and finished wines to speak for themselves. Specific oak cooperage is thoughtfully selected to draw out the innate beauty and power in the wine without overwhelming the aromas and flavors. Great care is taken in the cellar to delicately handle the must, which is never pumped and is punched down twice a day to create gentle extraction. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is lightly pressed to barrel where it will age for 21 months in 88% new French oak."
