The Emerson Brown Napa Valley Cabernets are always a terrific value and this one is no exception. This is a collaboration by two members of the Vineyard 29 winemaking team. Keith Emerson, Director of Winemaking at Vineyard 29, has over 18 vintages to his credit while Brian Brown earned his viticultural and enology degree from UC Davis back in 2001. Their philosophy and approach to winemaking accentuates the fruit over winemaking which results in wines of great balance and finesse.

This collaborative side project from winemakers Keith Emerson and Brian Brown needs to be on everyone's watch list. Between the two of them, their resumes read like a who's who of California movers and shakers. These long established relationships have given them access to some of the best growers in Napa, including a few culty start-ups we can only allude to here. The Napa Cabernet itself is a beautifully balanced red showing hallmark characteristics of black cherry, kirsch and currant aromas. Notes of tobacco and spice round out the character. It is a pure and elegant expression that has longevity written all over it. Most wines with this Napa pedigree would be twice the price of this stellar offering here. Not to be missed.

This wine captures a style of Cabernet Sauvignon I’m particularly partial to. There’s an elegance and freshness here not typically found in big reds from Napa Valley. The upfront aromatics allude to a bowl full of fresh red, blue, and black berries. There’s a cool element to the nose that hints at sage, spice, and a touch of mint. It’s not common to refer to Cabernet as refreshing but this wine has it. The wine soft and accessible with just enough tannin to give the wine some palate pleasing grip resulting in a long creamy finish. This is 100% pure Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 40% new French Oak. It’s classically styled and currently available only at K&L at a very customer friendly price.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
