 Intriguing notes of fraises des bois appear on the nose of the 2018 Coteaux Varois en Provence Rose, a blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Cinsault and 10% Syrah. It's light to medium-bodied, with subtle spice and earth shadings, a fine, silky texture and ample length on the finish. (JC)  (4/2019)

K&L Notes

Coteaux Varois en Provence is in the western middle of the Provence appellation, and is ringed by hills and mountains to the south, north, and west. The soils are mostly limestone and clay with the two main distinctions being altitude (most vineyards average 350 meters) and a continental climate influence. The surrounding mountains and hills act as natural barriers. Château Trians has the added benefit of having all north-facing vineyards preserving moderate and cooling temperatures. In 1989, under new ownership, the 50-acre vineyard began modernizing and shifted to organic production.

Rosé season is upon us! The Trians is always one of my favorite daily summer rosés, because it is as delicious as it is affordable. Pretty raspberry, strawberry, citrus and spice with lively acidity and freshness. It's time to pull together a cheese, fruit and charcuterie plate, raise the patio umbrella, crank up some tunes, and enjoy this Rosé with friends and family! Cheers to Summer!

Summer is firmly taking its grip on southern California and the clients are clamoring for chilled rosé. The Trians has become my Provencal rosé of the moment as it embodies most of what I seek in these wines. First and foremost, the wine is refreshing with a touch of tart cranberry, a dusting of strawberry essence, and aromatics of roasted herbs. While being Grenache dominant, I love the generous dollop of Cinsault, rounded out with Syrah. Secondly, the terroir here looks like it was destined for great rosé. 50 year old vines are situated on hillsides comprised of clay and limestone overlooking the Rhone Valley. It’s perfect as an aperitif or accompanying light summer fare such as fresh olives or an herb roasted chicken.

This is exciting project from Varois is making some pretty fabulous Provencal rose. Farmed organically, it is filled to the brim with ruby red grapefruit, light strawberry tones and a kiss of classic Herbes de Provence. It has the right balance of freshness and light structure to give it meaning all through rose season. This is sure to provide many a backyard excursion as the perfect complimentary wine.

This phenomenal rose from Provence is rich but clean, with a wonderful shoot of grapefruit through the middle of the palette that's framed elegantly by the firm acidity and currents on the end with a surprising lifted spice throughout. Promising to be a great companion to most meals, this is a BBQ rose if I've ever seen one.

- Provence encompasses the southeastern portion of France that borders the Mediterranean. The largest appellation in the region is the Cotes de Provence that spans 49,600 acres of land in and around Marseilles. Thirteen different varietals are grown in this appellation with the most important grapes being Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache, and Mouvedre. While much of the production is dry rose, there are many more serious wines being made from the area. Some of the most important smaller appellations within Provence include Bandol, Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence, and Coteaux Varois.
