Winemaker's Notes: "At York Creek we have a small block of Cabernet Sauvignon, planted entirely to the legendary "La Questra" clone of Cabernet. This clone was brought to California by Emmet Rixford back in the 1880s directly from Chateau Margaux in Bordeaux. It is one of the most highly sought after "heritage" clones of Cabernet Sauvignon in the state. We call this block the "Horseshoe" because of its shape. For several years, I have made a separate fermentation, and because of its unique character I decided to bottle a little as a separate wine. It's 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and all from the "Horseshoe" block. I would describe this as an intense Cabernet, distinctive, rich. And it's what I like to call 'a good story that's true.'"

2001 feels like an eon ago, but you'd think it was just yesterday based on this delightful red. Bright, expressive, and with no shortage of fruit, it is a superb example of the vintage. Possessing excellent length and persistence, it is a mouth-filling experience loaded with ample ripe flavors of cassis, Bing cherry, and salted plum. It is hard to believe such a delicious and classically-style red can be so affordably priced.

When Ryan told me he was bringing in more vintage York Creeks I got REALLY excited. For me, York Creek is the height of superb craftsmanship from a Napa Valley legend. And better yet, these stunning wines from Spring Mountain are aged to perfection. The 2001 Horseshoe was the first one I grabbed after tasting the line up and it is perfect right now. Beautiful, softened tannins and rich fruit, with a gorgeous bouquet of dried herbs and leather. Where else are you going to find winery-direct, back-vintaged Cabernet as stunning as this at under $30? You got to be kidding me. The staff is already jumping all over these. Be forewarned, these won't last long.

I love 2001 Napa Cab. It's a vintage that always comes across to me as perfectly proportioned with immaculate balance. Not a super big year or one with any dramatic weather events, but a vintage of consistency and age-ability. Some of my very best experiences with Napa Cab have come from this vintage. The Horseshoe Block bottling from York Creek fits this mold perfectly. Flavors, structure and length on the palate all speak of a classic vintage and one that is true to varietal. With almost 20 years in the bottle this wine is at it's peak for drinking and is beautifully mature without yet losing all of it's primary fruit characters. Maybe a rack of Lamb?

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the M├ędoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.


- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.

- America's most famous wine region, which encompasses a varied geographical territory running about 20 miles long from the San Francisco Bay northward to the foot of Mount St. Helena. Napa's great diversity, both in terms of climate and terroir, has led to the creation of a number of smaller AVAs like Stags Leap District, Rutherford, Howell Mountain, Oakville and Mount Veeder, among others. Cabernet and chardonnay still reign supreme, but just about everything under the sun is grown in Napa Valley, in quality levels ranging from $2 jug wine to $500 a bottle California cab.
