2018 Phélan-Ségur, St-Estèphe (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1408011 95 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark The flagship 2018 Château Phélan Ségur is a beauty based on 57% Cabernet Sauvignon and 43% Merlot. This was a great vintage for the Médoc, and the 2018 reveals a dense purple hue to go with powerful notes of blackcurrants, iron, smoked tobacco, chocolate, and earth. Rich, full-bodied, and concentrated, it has beautiful tannins, remarkable purity of fruit, and just does everything right. It has some up-front appeal today (no doubt due to the high Merlot content), yet it builds with time in the glass and shows more and more structure with air. It deserves 5-6 years of bottle age and will keep for 20-25. It's every bit as good as the 2016, if not better. Inner quote mark (3/2021)

95 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Aromas of blackcurrants, spice and flowers follow through to a medium body with fine tannins and a delicious, savory finish. So lovely to drink now, but will improve nicely with age. Very refined and balanced. Try after 2022. Inner quote mark (3/2021)

93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2018 Phélan Ségur is a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon and 43% Merlot, harvested from September 14 to October 4. The wine comes in at 14% alcohol, 3.8 pH and has an IPT (total polyphenol index) of 77. Deep purple-black in color, it springs from the glass with bright, vibrant notes of raspberry preserves, kirsch and ripe blackcurrants with hints of rose petals, tilled black soil, spice cake and warm plums plus a waft of star anise. Medium to full-bodied with a solid backbone of grainy tannins and seamless freshness, the palate sports a taut, muscular fruit profile with loads of bright red fruit sparks and a long, earthy finish. Outer quote mark Brilliant, succulent and luscious fruit. Blackberry, damson, chocolate and sage with a brilliant hold and muscular tannins. A yield of 48hl/ha. (JA) Inner quote mark (11/2020)

94 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2018 Phélan Ségur is just as convincing from bottle as it was en primeur. Deep and beautifully layered, with exceptional finesse and tons of personality, the 2018 delivers the goods big time. Dark blue/black fruit, gravel, spice, menthol, licorice and dried herbs all build as the 2018 shows off its allure. There is plenty of vintage 2018 richness, but a good deal of supporting structure as well. The 2018 is just exquisite. (AG) Inner quote mark (3/2021)

93 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Now on a roll, this estate is producing some fine wines. This latest release shows plenty of wood at this stage, but the bold black fruits are more than a match, giving the wine sumptuous richness. The wine needs time, so wait until 2026. (RV) Inner quote mark (3/2021)

93 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark This is really well-built, with a core of dark currant and blackberry paste flavors supported by racy charcoal and bay notes while flashes of savory and singed sandalwood dot the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. (JM) Inner quote mark (3/2021)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Deepest purple. Pure if slightly charry blackcurrant fruit. Dark-chocolate notes add another layer but not sweetness. Chewy, thick, dry but not tough tannins. Tongue-tied and not ready to be tasted, let alone drunk, for some time. Quite oaky. Chewy on the finish but there's plenty of compact fruit too – just all so dense that it is tied up on itself. More aromatic in the empty glass – the sweet black fruit and a hint of violets. Needs time to open in the glass just as it needs time in bottle. My score is based on the hope that it will eventually unfurl. (JH) 17/20 Inner quote mark (4/2019)

K&L Notes

92 points Neal Martin in Vinous: "The 2018 Phélan Ségur appears to have lost the green edge that I observed from barrel, now coming across fresh with blackberry, seaweed and light sea spray scents. It gently unfurls with aeration, though never slips into fifth gear. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, just a touch of dark chocolate infusing the black fruit and a cohesive, slightly peppery finish. This is a deftly crafted Phélan Ségur that will benefit from 3–4 years in bottle." (3/2021)

This has a jammy nose of black fruits along with hints of clay and oak. As the wine opens a faint whiff of smoke emerges. The wine is bold, firm and dry with a touch of leather playing off against all that energetic dark plum fruit. The finish is surprisingly fine and mineral laced.

Grand vin! The nose is authoritative and loaded with cool black fruit and the signature warm earth smell of St. Estèphe. Medium to full bodied with big bones of tannin, round black fruit and grace notes only found in top Bordeaux. The back end is full of black tea and lifted freshness at once. What a wine!

Loaded with flavors of mocha, spice. Sweet core of middle fruit and ripe tannins. Another winner from the region, this should turn out to be a great buy!
