2016 Dominus "Napanook" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

SKU #1407563 96 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark This is a flamboyant red that offers hazelnuts, dark berries and a hint of chocolate. Full-bodied with round and soft tannins. So fresh. So rich, enticing and layered. Inner quote mark (11/2018)

Outer quote mark Moving to the 2016s, this was a more abundant year for this estate and the vintage was compared to 2006 by the winemakers. The 2016 Napanook is another terrific wine and has a more elegant, pretty, seamless style than the 2015, with the purity of the 2016 vintage front and center. Classic red and blue fruits, spring flowers, and tobacco leaf notes all flow to a medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced red that will keep for 10-15 years. Inner quote mark (1/2019)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Very deep purple-black in color, the 2016 Napanook Proprietary Red Wine is composed of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot and 7% Cabernet Franc aged in 20% new oak. A beautiful perfume of violets, aniseed, truffles and lavender is just starting to emerge over a core of warm cassis, blackberry preserves and ripe plum plus hints of cedar chest, chocolate box, rare beef and cardamom. The palate is medium to full-bodied and firmly textured with very ripe tannins, gradually revealing layers of black and blue fruits plus loads of earthy sparks, finishing with amazing freshness and depth. Outer quote mark The 2016 Napanook will give readers tons of pleasure pretty much upon release. Open-knit and deep, with terrific fruit purity, the 2016 is impeccably balanced from start to finish. In this vintage, Napanook is distinctly medium in body, which adds to its immediacy and sheer appeal. Expressive aromatic top notes and silky tannins round things out nicely. (AG) Inner quote mark (12/2018)

Is there any better high-end value in Napa? Coming from the same vines as the First-Growth-quality Dominus Estate vineyards, Napanook is crafted under the stewardship of the same remarkable team. Deep aromas of blackberry, forest floor, and red florals lead the way to a gorgeous texture and waves of fruit that are balanced beautifully by the mouthwatering acidity. Echoes of blackberry turn more red towards the finish that lasts for a considerable amount of time. This is my favorite Napanook since the epic 2013, and it has all the pieces to age beautifully. It is a serious wine, but it is utterly delicious now all the same. Brilliant.

I'm at risk of sounding like a broken record...but for several years in a row I've preferred the Napanook bottling over Dominus' premier label on first impressions! Sure Dominus has the edge in sheer power and impressive structure, but the last few releases of Napanook have had supreme drinkability and have been very expressive, open knit wines right out of the gate. The 2016 is vibrant, and full of life. Bright red currants, fresh plum, bay laurel, hints of pipe smoke, red earth. Medium bodied, very supple, soft, satiny mouthfeel, not at all austere. If you're looking for something from Napa, made in a more traditional style but with great accessibility for drinking right now, this is your wine. Also given the wine's quality and pedigree the price point of is still very reasonable compared to modern day costs in Napa!
