2015 Domaine Giraud "Prémices" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Previously $37)

SKU #1407400 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

From the younger vines of the estate (which range from 10- to 50-year-old-vines) and 100% Grenache, the 1,000-case 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Prémices is a perfumed, elegant, sweetly fruited effort that has lots strawberries, framboise, licorice and crushed flower-like aromas and flavors. It’s a polished and seamless as they come, and a seriously good effort to drink over the coming 4-6 years. Under the inspired leadership of Marie Giraud, with assistance from consultant Philippe Cambie, this estate has quickly risen into the tiny handful of top estates in Châteauneuf du Pape. The style here incorporates a mix of traditional and progressive techniques, and while the Grenache is always kept in concrete tanks, they utilized smaller barrels for their Syrah. While they produced two seriously good 2014 Châteauneuf du Papes, their 2015s are blockbusters that I’ll certainly be buying! (JD) (10/2016)

92 points Wine Spectator

A pure, elegant style, with an alluring raspberry puree note leading the way, while light blood orange, red currant and plum fruit flavors follow close behind. Nuances of incense, mulling spices and rooibos tea flitter throughout. The finish is silky and persistent. Best from 2018 through 2030. (JM) (10/2017)

90-92 points Vinous

Vivid ruby-red. Sharply focused red fruit, spicecake and floral scents are complicated by suggestions of dusty minerals and white pepper. Lively, penetrating and appealingly sweet, offering silky raspberry and floral pastille flavors that deepen as the wine opens up. Shows very good focus and energy on the gently tannic finish, which leaves behind hints of succulent herbs and red berries. (JR) (3/2017)

Country:

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
Sub-Region:

Rhone

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
