2014 Martinborough Vineyard 'Home Block' Pinot Noir Martinborough

SKU #1406546 96 points Raymond Chan

Outer quote mark Even, dark ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the edge. This has an elegantly presented nose with ethereal volume of ripe savoury dark-red berry fruits entwine harmoniously with a layer of dried herbs and earth, along with nutty and slightly resinous oak. Subtle dark-red florals emerge in the glass. Medium-full bodied, the palate is rich and well-concentrated with vibrantly sweet fruit flavours of savoury dark-red berry fruits complexed by layers of dark and dried herbs, and earthy and nutty oak interest. The fruit richness is enhanced by lacy acidity, and supported by balancing fine-grained, flowery tannin extraction. The fruit and textures carry with harmony to an elegantly firm and lingering finish. This is an elegantly rich, concentrated and complex-detailed Pinot Noir with savoury dark-red fruits with herbal and earthy notes on a fine-structured and balanced palate with good vitality. A classical expression of Martinborough. Match with game meat and casseroles over the next 6+ years. Fruit from the company’s oldest blocks on the Martinborough Terrace, hand-picked and hand-sorted and indigenous yeast fermented with 20% whole bunches to 13.5% alc., the wine spending on average 24 days on skins and aged 12 months in 31% new French oak barrels. Outer quote mark This is stunning. Fine yet powerful, intense yet refined. The complex bouquet shows red/black cherry, smoked meat, mixed spice, dried herb and cedar characters. It is superbly concentrated and focused on the palate, and offers layers of fine texture and savoury nuances, brilliantly structured by fine, delicately drying tannins. One for the pinot enthusiasts. At its best: 2018 to 2026. Inner quote mark (8/2016)

Outer quote mark The 2014 Pinot Noir Home Block has a pale to medium ruby-purple color and nose of red and black cherries, black tea and dusty earth with a hint of garrigue. Medium-bodied and delicately played on the palate, it has a quiet, earthy intensity and solid frame of chewy tannins plus lively acidity, which carries the savory flavors to a long finish. K&L Notes

94 points The Wine Front: "Tasted quickly at Pinot Noir 2017. Cherry, red fruits, cedar and mineral. Composed feel, fine grained tannin, the weight, richness and pitch of it is just so, the length spicy, ripe in fruit, yet savoury. Great." (GW, 03/2017). "Been a while between Martinborough Vineyard wines. Paul Mason is a considered and thoughtful winemaker, it feels, finessing the MV house style. This wine comes from older plantings, the original ones, which makes them some of the oldest pinot in the region. The vines surround the winery. Has that serious richness, wood spice, cedar, clove, twiggy oak, then a cavalcade of dark forest berry fruit, plum skins. The palate is supple with soft tannins, a prickle of spicy oak, yet feels very fine in the mouth, set to dart-shaped, finishes chiselled and pure. Oak a companion here, the wine is complex, layered, fine. It’s a regal feel. It’s very good." (MB, 11/2016)
