The lowest in proof of our current round of overaged Whistle Pig casks, this barrel highlights the darker nature of things. More cocoa and mocha to go with brandied fruits and a gentle but persistent herbal quality. A bit surprisingly this feels bigger on the palate than some of the higher proofed barrels, but that's not a bad thing. I find it particularly exceptional in a Manhattan.

I enjoy the balance between the spice and the floral characteristics on the nose of this bottling of Whistle Pig for K&L. Sharp cinnamon and pepper snap at the nostrils up front, but then cooler aromas arise quickly for a soft little bouquet of flowers. Pleasing warm grain scents come out next for me with a slight tangerine element. Then there's a slight soft dusty caramel tone that shows through. The palate unfolds somewhat differently - starting with peppermint, then becoming herbaceous, getting quite woody (polished oak), then returning to more mint for a finish that's both spicy and cooling. Hey Ma! It tingles!

If you are after a creamy, smooth style of Rye Whiskey, this single barrel of Whistle Pig is the one for you. I expected something much rougher around the edges, but was very pleasantly surprised to find a refined, lighter-style whiskey. After tasting a few of our individual barrels from Whistle Pig, I am so excited how differently each one is presenting. It's fun to discover how warehouse location can make such a profound difference. Pick up a couple and try them out for yourself.
